Ashley Tappin (born December 18, 1974 in Marietta , Georgia ) is a former American swimmer and three-time Olympic champion .
In 1988, at the age of 13, she was the youngest ever swimmer to take part in the US preliminary competitions. She finally reached 50th place. At the 1990 World Cup, she won a gold medal and even three at the 1991 Pan-American Games .
In 1992 at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona , she swam for the US swimming relay in the 4 × 100 m freestyle in the preliminary run and finally won the gold medal with her.
In the 1996/97 season, she announced her resignation after an injury. However, she soon returned. During her time off, she began a successful modeling career. She was offered a role in Baywatch , but she declined.
At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , she swam again two preliminary runs with the US swimming relay and achieved two more Olympic victories in 4 × 100 m freestyle and 4 × 100 m medley.
Today Tappin is a swimming and diving instructor at the University of New Orleans .
