Michael Bennett (born March 26, 1971 in Chicago ) is a retired American boxer. He is not to be confused with Michael Bentt , who boxed in the same class.

amateur

In 1999 Bennett was second in the heavyweight division (up to 91 kg) after a final defeat against Malik Scott at the US championships, but lost prematurely to DaVarryl Williamson at the Golden Gloves tournament . In the same year he then, under fortunate circumstances, won the heavyweight title at the World Amateur Championships in Houston . After victories over the Dutchman Patrick Mesters and the Uzbek Serik Umirbekow, he reached the semifinals. There he met Steffen Kretschmann , who had to give up after the second round of their fight due to injury. In the final battle, the Cuban Félix Savón would have been his opponent, but since he boycotted the final because of alleged disadvantages of the Cuban team, Bennett became world champion without a fight.

In 2000 he was US champion with a victory over Jason Estrada , he was also able to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney . Bennett beat Poland's Wojciech Bartnik there , but then met Savón in the quarter-finals and lost 8-23 (RSCO-3).

professional

In 2001 he became a professional in the cruiserweight division , but remained unsuccessful despite high impact, as he had poor ability to take. After four knockout defeats in 14 fights, he ended his career in 2003.
