Connie Price-Smith
Connie Price-Smith (actually Constance Marie Price-Smith, born Price; * 3. June 1962 in Saint Charles , Missouri ) is a former American shot putter and discus thrower . While playing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale , she was on a basketball scholarship and did not begin athletic throws until her senior year of college. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports science.
Athletic career
In 1987 she won bronze in the discus throw at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis ; at the World Athletics Championships in Rome in the same year she remained in the final without a valid attempt.
At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , she was eliminated in both the shot put and discus throw in qualification.
In 1989 she was tenth in the shot put at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest and seventh in the discus throw at the World Athletics Cup in Barcelona . In 1991 she was seventh in the shot put at the World Indoor Championships in Seville , won silver at the Pan American Games in Havana and was eleventh at the World Championships in Tokyo .
The following year she did not get past the first round in the discus throw at the 1992 Olympic Games . At the Athletics World Cup in Havana , she was fourth in the shot put and seventh in the discus throw.
In 1993 she was ninth in the shot put at the World Indoor Championships in Toronto , but failed in qualifying at the World Championships in Stuttgart in both disciplines. At the Athletics World Cup in 1994 she was sixth in the discus throw.
In the following years, she limited herself to the shot put because of knee problems. In 1995 she won silver at the World Indoor Championships in Barcelona , won the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata and finished ninth at the World Championships in Gothenburg .
At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, she came in fifth.
In 1997 she was sixth at the World Indoor Championships in Paris and fifth at the World Championships in Athens . The following year she was third in the 1998 World Athletics Cup in Johannesburg. In 1999 she finished fourth at the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi , defended her title at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg and finished eleventh at the World Championships in Seville .
At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, she was eliminated from the qualification. In 2001 she was tenth at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon .
She was eleven times US champion in the shot put (1988, 1990, 1992-2000) and six times in the discus throw (1987, 1989, 1990, 1992-1994). She won the US indoor shot put title seven times (1991-1993, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2001). In total (with hall and team) she won 25 American championships.

After the active career
After her active career, she became an athletics trainer at Southern Illinois University Carbondale , which improved significantly under her leadership. She also became assistant coach for the US national team, responsible for women's throws. In this capacity she has been at all Olympic Games, World Athletics Championships and the Pan American Games since 2004. She has been the University of Mississippi's track and field coach since 2015 .
In 2016 she was elected to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame . She is currently the head coach for athletics at her alma mater, Southern Illinois University Carbondale .
