Jeffrey "Jeff" Alan Agoos (born May 2, 1968 in Geneva ) is a former American football player .

He was born in Switzerland when his father was a diplomat there; But he grew up in Texas .

Career

Club and coaching career

Agoos began his career on the football team at the University of Virginia , where he studied. In 1991, while still a student, he signed a contract with the Maryland Bays amateur soccer club , which was then playing in the American Soccer League .

In 1992 he moved to the Dallas Sidekicks , who played in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), a professional indoor soccer league. With them he was also in the final final before the league was discontinued. The game was lost 4-2 against the San Diego Sockers .

After giving up the MISL, Agoos moved overseas to the German club SV Wehen in 1994 . For the Hessen he played for one season in the Regionalliga Süd .

1995 returned to the USA and became assistant coach under Bruce Arena at the University of Virginia . He followed him in 1996 to DC United in the then newly founded Major League Soccer . With United he won the MLS Cup and the US Open Cup that year . The following year, DC United was also the winner of the national championship. The same thing happened in 1998.

In 2000 he moved to West Bromwich Albion on loan . There he could not assert himself and in 2001 moved to the San José Earthquakes in the MLS. With the Californians he won the MLS Cup in 2001 and 2004.

In 2005 he changed one last time. His new employer were the MetroStars . That year Agoos was also included in the best team of the last decade.

On December 8, 2005, he ended his career. In ten years in Major League Soccer he had a record of eleven goals in a total of 244 games.

For the 2008 season , Agoos took over the position of General Manager at the New York Red Bulls. He thus became the successor to Bruce Arena. On March 28, 2011, he accepted an offer from Major League Soccer and became its Technical Director of Competition .

National team

His first international match completed Agoos against the national soccer team of Guatemala on January 13, 1988. Overall, he was between 1988 and 2003 134 times on the field, where he scored four goals.

He also took part in a World Cup finals three times in 1994 , 1998 and 2002 .

In 1992, Agoos was part of the US squad at the Futsal World Cup in Hong Kong, when they were runner-up by a 4-1 defeat in the final against Brazil.
