After persistent knee problems, Abdur-Rahim ended his active career in 2008 and was employed in the management of the Kings. In 2013 he finally became “General Manager” of the Reno Bighorns, the Kings “ farm team ”.

Abdur-Rahim has been the new president of the NBA sub-division G-League since 2018 .

Career

Vancouver grizzlies

In the 1996 draft , Abdur-Rahim was selected in third place after only one year of college (in Berkeley ) by the Vancouver Grizzlies , who only played their second season in the NBA. In his first year, he became the best basket shooter on his team. In one of the best years in NBA history, Abdur-Rahim was voted third in the selection for Rookie of the Year and in the selection team for the best rookies ( NBA All-Rookie First Team ).

In the following four seasons with the Grizzlies, Abdur-Rahim averaged over 20 points per game and was also the best rebounder of his team. Nevertheless, the Grizzlies remained one of the worst teams in the league, so that Abdur-Rahim could never reach the play-offs .

Atlanta Hawks

For the 2001/02 NBA season , when the Grizzlies moved to Memphis , Abdur-Rahim moved to the Atlanta Hawks in his home state of Georgia during the 2001 NBA Draft for rookie Pau Gasol . Abdur-Rahim also remained a good 20 point scorer in Atlanta. But despite again strong performances, which brought him his only nomination for an All-Star Game , as well as Jason Terry , he did not reach the play-offs again. In the 2002/03 season , Abdur-Rahim, Terry and Glenn Robinson formed the best trio in the NBA in terms of points scored, but even with the Hawks, Abdur-Rahim was unable to participate in the play-offs.

Portland Trail Blazers

In February 2004, Abdur-Rahim moved to Portland, where he was rarely on the starting line-up in the remaining games of the 2003/04 season . In the following season , Abdur-Rahim could not quite build on the performance before he switched to the Trail Blazers. However, it got an average of 16.8 points. In addition, he had to sit out for a long time for the first time in his NBA career due to an elbow injury.

Sacramento Kings

After a move to the New Jersey Nets did not materialize, Abdur-Rahim signed with the Kings. Here Abdur-Rahim was only irregularly on the starting line-up, but reached the play-offs for the first time in his career. In the first round, Sacramento lost to the San Antonio Spurs and was eliminated. 2006/07 Abdur-Rahim could not prevail again permanently against Kenny Thomas and for the first time in his NBA career achieved an average of less than 10 points per game. For the first time in 8 years it was not enough for the Kings for the play-offs.

On September 22nd, 2008 Abdur-Rahim announced due to persistent knee problems, at the age of 31 years of his resignation as a professional player to take a position in the management of the Kings.

National team

Abdur-Rahim took part in the 2000 Olympic Games as a replacement for the injured Grant Hill and won the gold medal with the US national team.

End of career

After the end of his career, Abdur-Rahim made up his college degree at Berkeley in sociology. In 2016 he did his Master of Business Administration at USC.

From 2008 to 2010, Abdur-Rahim was the assistant coach of the Sacramento Kings before he switched to management and continued to be employed as an assistant manager. For the 2013-14 season he was General Manager of the Reno Bighorns in the D-League . Abdur-Rahim has been president of the NBA base league G-League since 2018 .
