from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lincoln Paul McIlravy (born July 17, 1974 in Rapid City , South Dakota ) is a retired American wrestler . He was a medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games and the 1998 and 1999 World Wrestling Championships in free style lightweight.

Career

Lincoln McIlravy grew up in Philip and began wrestling with two brothers at the age of five. The brothers initially trained without a trainer, supported by their father and following written instructions. Training then became more systematic in Philip high school and Lincoln McIlravy achieved great success as a high school wrestler. He was named South Dakota high school champion five times in a row. He was also twice American junior champion, once among the cadets (age group up to 16 years of age) and once among the juniors (age group up to 18 years of age), always in free style. As a high school wrestler, he had about 200 wins with only 25 losses by 1992.

From 1992 he then attended Iowa State University . There he came into the wing of the most famous US coach Dan Gable , who was an Olympic lightweight (free style) champion in 1972 . In 1993 and 1994 he was NCAA champion (American student champion) in feather and lightweight. In 1995 he had to admit defeat in the final of this championship Steve Marianetti and took 2nd place. He won the third NCAA title in 1997 in the lightweight before Chris Bono . For his university he played 174 fights, of which he won 172 and lost only 2.

In 1996 Lincoln McIlravy tried to qualify in the US Olympic eliminations (Trials) for the Olympic Games in Atlanta . But he failed at Townsend Saunders . From 1997 to 2000, Lincoln McIlravy, who belonged to the Gateway Wrestling Club Coralville , was also the American lightweight champion (AAU).

In 1997 he qualified for participation in the World Championships in Krasnoyarsk . This started his international career as a wrestler. In the lightweight he won his first two fights, but then lost to the internationally much more experienced Zaza Zazirow from Ukraine and Davoud Ghanbari from Iran and therefore only came in 12th place.

In 1998 he won the internationally renowned "Ivan Yarigin" memorial in Krasnoyarsk , the World Cup in Stillwater and the Goodwill Games in New York . He was able to make positive use of the international experience he gained at the World Cup in Tehran . He lost his first fight there against the 1995 and 1997 world champion Araik Geworgjan from Armenia with a tie of 3: 3 by a referee decision, but then defeated Fatih Özbas from Turkey , Ahmat Al-Osta from Syria , Almazbek Askarow from Kyrgyzstan , Kim Eun -yoo from South Korea , Welichan Alachwerdijew from Russia , Igor Kupejew from Uzbekistan and Daniel Igali from Canada . With these seven victories, he fought brilliantly for the bronze medal in the World Cup after the unfortunate defeat against Geworgjan .

In 1999 Lincoln McIlravy won again at the World Cup in Spokane in front of Daniel Igali , Amir Tavakolian from Iran and Yosvany Sánchez Larrudet from Cuba . He then won the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in the lightweight before Yosvany Sánchez Larrudet and David Igali. At the world championship this year in Ankara , he defeated the world-class athletes Ivan Todorow from Bulgaria , Ruslan Veliew from Kazakhstan , Amir Tavakolian, Araik Geworgjan (three-time world champion) and Yüksel Sanli from Turkey and thus stood in the final against Daniel Igali, whom he narrowly played with 2: 3 techn. Had to give points beaten. Igali became world champion and Lincoln McIlravy was vice world champion.

In 2000, Lincoln McIlravy won the World Cup for the third time, which this year was held at George Mason University in Fairfax , ahead of Orest Skobolewski from Ukraine, Yosvany Sánchez Larrudet and Saur Kasbekow from Russia. At the Olympic Games in Sydney he won the lightweight over Ibo Oziti from Nigeria , Yüksel Sanli and Ivan Diaconu from Romania and met in the semifinals on his old rival Daniel Igali , who won this fight 6: 3 techn. Points won. For Lincoln McIlravy it was only possible to win the Olympic bronze medal , which he achieved with a victory over Sergei Demtschenko from Belarus .

After the 2000 Olympic Games, Lincoln McIlravy, only 26 years old, retired from his career as an active wrestler because he got a position as a coach at his university, Iowa State University, which he still holds (2009).
