Career

Yüksel Şanlı started wrestling as a teenager in 1984. He belonged to the renowned Ankara Tedaş Spor Kulübü sports club and was mainly trained by Yakup Topuz. The 1.69 meter tall athlete only wrestled in free style and always started with the seniors in the lightweight.

His international career began in 1988, when he took second place behind the Soviet athlete Sultan Kipkejew at the European Junior Championships (Cadets, the age group up to the age of 16) in Izmir in the weight class up to 47 kg body weight. His next use at an international championship he had then again in 1991. He finished at the Junior World Championship (the age group up to the age of 18) in Istanbul in the lightweight behind Araik Geworgjan from Armenia , who will be one of his main rivals in future championships should be and Fulvio Verde from Italy .

At the Junior European Championships (Espoirs, the age group up to the age of 20) in Székesfehérvár in 1992 , he only reached 9th place in the lightweight. At the Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in Athens in 1993 he reached the final battle again, which he lost against Araik Geworgjan . He became vice world champion of the juniors.

Yüksel Şanlı's first start at an international senior championship was very successful. In Friborg he was runner-up in the lightweight European champion behind the Russian Vadim Bogijew and thus placed himself in front of Araik Geworgjan , who took 3rd place. He also did well at the World Championships this year in Atlanta with a 5th place. The winner there was his old rival Araik Geworgjan.

In the 1996 Olympic year, Yüksel Şanlı was not in good shape. He was only seventh at the European Championships in Budapest and disappointed at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in the lightweight with two defeats against Townsend Saunders from the United States and the until then largely unknown Syrian wrestler Ahmad Al-Aosta . He ended up in 15th place.

He was again Vice European Champion in 1997 in Warsaw . There he even managed the feat of defeating the Russian Adam Saitijew on points and thus throwing him out of the competition. In the final battle he was defeated by Araik Geworgjan just 1: 2 techn. Points. At the world championship this year in Krasnoyarsk he got four wins. But defeats against Igor Kupejew from Uzbekistan and against Adam Saitijew threw him back to 8th place.

In 1998, Yüksel Şanlı achieved the greatest success of his wrestling career in Bratislava . He was with wins over Janos Fórizs from Hungary , Welichan Alachwerdijew from Russia, Mehmet Ahmet Edjevit from Bulgaria and Zaza Zazirow from Ukraine European champion . Unfortunately, he was unable to take part in this year's World Cup due to an injury.

At the European Championships in 1999 in Minsk he was able to take part again and came in 6th place with two wins and one loss in the third round against Welichan Alachwerdijew. He won a medal again at the 1999 World Cup in Ankara . It took him five wins. The American Lincoln McIlravy , against whom he lost on points, denied him a place in the final . He won the World Cup bronze medal by defeating Emzarios Bentinidis from Greece .

In 2000, Yüksel Şanlı focused entirely on the Olympics in Sydney . But he did not succeed in winning a medal there either. After a victory over Ibo Oziti from Nigeria , he lost again in his second fight against Lincoln McIlravy and only came in 9th place. Yüksel Şanlı ended his career in 2001 with a win at the Mediterranean Games in Tunis . He studied sport and is now (2009) the Turkish national coach for freestyle wrestlers.
