Timothy Matthew "Tim" Howard (born March 6, 1979 in North Brunswick Township , New Jersey ) is an American football goalkeeper and official . He has been playing for the Memphis 901 FC in the USL Championship since March 2020 , where he is also co-owner and sporting director.

Career

In the club

Beginnings in New Jersey

Tim Howard is the son of an Afro-American father and a Hungarian mother who emigrated to the United States after the popular uprising in 1956 . Tim Howard grew up in poor conditions in New Jersey. His professional football career began right out of high school . He played for the North Jersey Imperials in the United Soccer Leagues (USISL) .

Major League Soccer

In 1998 he was signed to Major League Soccer (MLS), which placed him with the NY / NJ MetroStars . For this team he played until 2003. Howard was initially a substitute goalkeeper behind Tony Meola , later behind Mike Ammann , but moved up to number one when Ammann was sold before the 2001 season. Precisely because he often played behind a miserable Metro defense, he showed convincing performances with great commitment. In 2001 he was elected “Goalkeeper of the Year” (goalkeeper of the year) of the MLS and in 2001 and 2002 for the “MLS Best XI” (Team of the Year)

Premier League

Tim Howard at Everton FC (2015)

In the middle of the 2003 MLS season, Manchester United took Howard under contract, where he replaced French international Fabien Barthez . He became the first American to play for the Manchester United first team. His start at the new club was a good one; he saved the decisive penalty in the Supercup game against Arsenal . Later in the season he went out of shape and frivolously caused the goal for FC Porto , which meant that United were eliminated from the Champions League . After a pause for thought, Howard regained his regular place in the goal of Roy Carroll and won his first title on the island in the English Cup final. In his first season he was also voted into the English Team of the Year ("PFA Best XI") and was the only Manchester United player in this virtual team.

In the second year in Manchester there were many changes in goal between Howard and Carroll, as both made a number of mistakes. At the end of the season, Howard signed a new contract with United that ran until 2009. The club released its two rivals in goal ( Ricardo López Felipe and Carroll) in summer 2005 - but shortly afterwards bought the experienced Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar . This upset Howard so much that he said in an interview that he would not have signed his new contract if he had even suspected that van der Sar was on his way to United.

In May 2006, his club agreed with Everton FC on a loan deal for the 2006/07 season. In February 2007, the loan deal became a direct contract and Howard signed for five years with Everton FC. Curiously, he managed a goal for his club in a 2-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers on January 4, 2012 when he scored 1-0 after a back pass within the sixteen-yard area from a goal distance of almost 100 meters. On matchday 15 of the 2013/2014 season, Howard played his 250th league game for Everton in the game against Arsenal, the game ended with 1: 1.

Return to the USA

On March 20, 2016, it was announced that Howard is returning to Major League Soccer and has signed a three-year contract with the Colorado Rapids . In the 2016 , 2017 , 2018 and 2019 seasons , he made 102 MLS appearances.

In October 2019, Howard initially announced his retirement. In early March 2020, it signed the USL championship - Franchise 901 FC Memphis , where he is co-owner and director of sport, a contract for the season 2020 .

In the national team

Howard first played for the United States at the 1999 U-20 World Cup in Nigeria . At the 2000 Summer Olympics , he was second goalkeeper behind Brad Friedel . On March 10, 2002, he had his first A mission against Ecuador . Until the beginning of 2006 he played 15 times internationally for the USA national team .

He was unlucky that in front of him, Friedel (who ended his career in February 2005) and the former Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper Kasey Keller, two top-class goalkeepers were or are in the national team. At the Confederation Cup 2009 Howard was in goal in all 5 games of the USA. After showing some weaknesses in the first game, he was better organized in his further appearances in the course of the tournament and so came to some brilliant saves. With the national team he reached the final of the competition. He was honored with the Golden Glove Award for best goalkeeper.

Even for those in South Africa discharged 2010 FIFA World Cup , he was in the US squad summoned. As a regular goalkeeper, he played all four games in his home country over the full season and qualified as the winner of Group C with the Soccer Boys for the round of 16, in which he lost to Ghana with the United States after extra time and was thus eliminated from the tournament.

He is one of the few regular players to whom the US national coach Jürgen Klinsmann, who has been in office since 2011, has held on.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Howard, who once again went into the tournament as a regular goalkeeper, made history: On July 1, 2014, he saved 16 shots on goal in the World Cup round of 16 against Belgium , more than any goalkeeper at a World Cup since 1966. The US -American national team lost the game with 1: 2 in extra time.

With 104 internationals now, he has been the record goalkeeper in the USA since June 26, 2014, when he replaced Kasey Keller, who made 102 internationals between 1990 and 2007, with his 103rd international match against Germany.

Trivia

Tim Howard has had Tourette syndrome since childhood . He has sudden muscle twitches in one arm, eye, or neck, and sometimes several muscles at the same time. It is only when the ball comes close to it that nothing can be felt. In 2001 he received the title of “Humanitarian of the Year” from the MLS for his work with children suffering from Tourette's syndrome. Howard is also an ambassador for Show Racism the Red Card . Howard is an avowed Christian and belongs to the branch of Athletes in Action organization Cru on. Since 2009 he has also been part of the Harlem Globetrotters show basketball troupe .
