Ricardo López Felipe , Ricardo for short , (born December 30, 1971 in Madrid ) is a former Spanish football player and today's coach .

Player career

Beginnings in Spain

Ricardo, who comes from the youth of Atlético, made the leap into professional football with the 2nd team of the "Rojiblancos". From 1995 to 1998 he played occasionally for the first team, but was mostly a substitute keeper. He spent the following four years at Real Valladolid , with an upward trend , so that he was even nominated for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea (he was, however, the 2nd goalkeeper without a mission).

Manchester United

Finally, Manchester United signed him as a substitute goalkeeper behind the French Fabien Barthez with the possibility of being in goal himself in the foreseeable future. In the 3 years Ricardo was at Man Utd. was under contract, he still came only to a single league appearance. During the 2003/2004 season he was even loaned to the Spanish first division club Racing Santander , after Tim Howard was another national goalkeeper at Man Utd. was committed.

In 2005 Ricardo finally came to an end, who was determined to assert himself, as the Dutchman Edwin van der Sar was signed by Fulham as the new number 1 and Ricardo would only have remained in the unpopular position of number 3 in the goalkeeping ranking.

Return to Spain

In CA Osasuna he found a club that gave him the chance to prove himself in the Primera División and he took this chance. From 2005 to 2012 he was a regular goalkeeper. After more than 200 competitive games, he ended his career in summer 2012 at the age of 40. In early 2013 he made himself available again as a substitute goalkeeper after Asier Riesgo , the regular number two, was injured. On the last day of the 2012/13 season , he came to a brief assignment.

Coaching career

After the end of his active career, Ricardo became a goalkeeping coach for the Japanese national team in the summer of 2014 . Until summer 2016 he worked under Javier Aguirre and his successor Vahid Halilhodžić . In early 2018 he became the head coach of Racing Ferrol in Segunda División B , but could not prevent the club's relegation.
