Cru (until 2011 Campus Crusade for Christ ) is a non-denominational, non-denominational mission and training movement evangelical imprint. In Germany it is known as Campus for Christ Germany , in Switzerland as Campus for Christ Switzerland and in Austria as Campus for Christ Austria. It was founded in 1951 by Bill Bright at the University of California, Los Angeles as a student ministry. Today, however, Cru works with a wide variety of people: Among others, athletes, musicians, families and is also active in development aid. Around 225,000 employees work for Cru in over 190 countries. Despite his evangelical imprint Cru is religiously independent and works interdenominational together with all churches.

history

In 1951, the American Bill Bright began to spread the evangelical Christian faith at universities. His focus was on working among students, as he saw in them the key people for the society of tomorrow. Bright's motto was: "Reach Campus For Christ Today - Reach The World For Christ Tomorrow". In 1952 he published a tract in which he formulated " Four Spiritual Laws ". In the beginning, he and his staff mainly worked at universities. The Berkeley Blitz , a very systematic evangelism at the University of Berkeley in 1967, became known. This university was known for its strong communist character. There were also repeated student unrest here. About 600 campus employees confronted the 27,000 students with faith in Jesus Christ in a very targeted manner.

Crus' most successful project was the Jesus film . The idea to make a film about the life of Jesus came up as early as 1950. In 1978 the project was realized and a year later it came to American cinemas, where it initially flopped. The success of this film, however, lies in its dissemination. In 2007 it was translated into its thousandth language. At the time, it was estimated that the film had been seen 5-6 billion times by then.

The EXPLO conferences that have been held since 1972 are intended to strengthen Christians in their faith. At the same time, they should be encouraged to share their beliefs with others. One of the highlights was EXPLO 1974 in Seoul . In terms of size, it exceeded everything that was considered possible in the evangelical scene at the time: 330,000 mainly Korean Christians met at the largest evangelization congress to date. Joon Gon Kim, the director of Campus Crusade for Christ in South Korea, is organizing the inspiring event in collaboration with 12,000 congregations.

In August 2001, Bill Bright handed over the reins of Cru to longtime Vice President Steve Douglass. In 2011 the name of Campus Crusade for Christ in the USA was renamed to Cru .
