Jesus (Subtitle 1: The man who doesn't fit into any scheme , Subtitle 2: Nobody moved people like he did ) is an American film about the life and suffering of Jesus Christ , which was written around the evangelical organization Campus Crusade for Christ Developed internationally . The Jesus project developed around the film and is now also available in a children's version (German: Aufregung um Jesus ) and a radio play version in most of the world's languages. The online versions are free.

Some of the films were shot on original locations in Israel with locals as extras and for the most part also as the main actors.

The film depicts the events around Jesus mainly according to the Gospel of Luke in order to avoid leaps between the Gospels as much as possible. Dialogues that do not appear in the New Testament are not used.

History and dissemination

As early as 1950, Bill Bright , founder and president of Campus for Christ, had the plan to make a film about the life of Jesus in order to reach as many people around the world as possible - especially illiterate people - with the Christian message. In 1978, a financier was found among the sympathizers of Campus for Christ International. John Heyman , who had already made Genesis films, acted as producer . In addition to 45 main actors, another 5,000 extras were involved in the shooting. The historical sites of Israel were chosen as the film location. In 1979 the film was released in over 2000 American cinemas. Warner Brothers was involved as a distributor . In the US, the film was a flop , but later it was translated into more than 1,600 languages. This makes "Jesus" the most translated film in film history. A short time later the film was also shown in Germany; In recent times it has been widely spread through giveaways and use in religious education .

Around 70,000 films were given to communities to give away.

continuation

There is also a four-part film adaptation of the Acts of the Apostles, which is similarly strict to the Lukan model.
