Roland Garber (born August 27, 1972 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian cyclist who was mainly successful on the track . Alongside Franz Stocher, he was one of the dominant Austrian cyclists on the track from the mid-1990s to the 2000s.

Athletic career

Roland Garber began professional bike training at the age of 13 under the supervision of his father Walter Garber (1935–2017), who was involved in various Austrian cycling such as the organizer of the Lower Austria Tour . After numerous successes in youth and junior races, he entered the army sports and hand-to-hand combat school in 1990, which enabled him to continue his career. From 1995 he drove for the Austrian team Elk Haus .

In total, Garber won 30 national titles in various disciplines on the track such as omnium , 1000 meter time trial , scratch , single pursuit , points , sprint and two-man team driving . He started twice at the Olympic Games : in 2000 in Sydney he finished fifth with Werner Riebenbauer in the two-man team and four years later at the Games in Athens he finished eighth with Franz Stocher . Also together with Stocher, he won silver in the two-man team driving at the UCI-Bahn World Championships in 2002 .

Garber now runs a bicycle shop in Vienna (as of 2017).

Honors

In 2003 Roland Garber received the Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
