Helmut "Heli" Oblinger (born March 14, 1973 in Schärding , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian canoeist .

Life

The regular soldier living in Schärding was a member of the Upper Austrian ski team as a teenager, but soon switched to canoe slalom (influenced by his parents) . After a 28th place in a single kayak at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , the first successes came in 1998 with a second place at the World Cup finals. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 , Oblinger was fourth. The highlights were a World Cup and four European Championship medals. After being at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens who finished 13th and took Oblinger 2008 for the fourth time at the Olympic Games in part and finished seventh. At his fifth Olympic Games in London in 2012 , Oblinger finished 8th.

Helmut Oblinger is married to the canoeist Violetta Oblinger-Peters and has had a boy since 2009. In 2013 their second son was born.

In autumn 2016, Oblinger was appointed head coach of the Austrian national team.
