The 470 is an Olympic two-man racing dinghy with trapeze and spinnaker , named after the total length of the sailboat in cm.

history

The 470 was designed in France in 1963 by André Cornu, who named his design after the length of the boat (470 cm). As one of the first boats to glide downwind , it attracted a lot of attention at the 1963 Paris Boat Show. From the start of production in 1964, the class enjoyed great popularity and - starting in France - quickly achieved widespread use. As early as 1966, 1,600 boats had been built and the first European championship was held - at that time with 64 boats from Belgium, France and Switzerland. In 1969 he became an international class. In Germany, the 470 was overshadowed by corsairs and pirates for a long time , but eventually became more popular in Germany due to its international distribution. The first world championships took place in 1970 on Lac de Lacanau near Bordeaux . Since the Olympic Games in 1976 (men) and 1988 (women), the 470 has been in the Olympic class.

construction

The hull is made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic in a multi-chamber design with watertight side tanks and watertight foredeck. In the wing tanks are additionally fixed buoyancy that for Unsinkbarkeit the dinghy, even with leaking wing tanks guarantee. The hull construction is a round frame with sliding properties so that high speeds can be achieved. This gives the boat a little less stability, which has to be compensated for by the trapeze.

The mast is made of aluminum. It is stabilized by steel shrouds and forestay as well as a mast controller. A trapeze device for the bow is also attached to the mast. In addition to a mainsail and a jib, the dinghy also has a spinnaker . Numerous trimming devices on the mast and sails ensure optimum trim options in order to be able to fully exploit the high speed potential of the hull. At 120 kg, the 470 has a low weight in relation to the sail area (see sail load rating ).

sailing

In order to sail the 470, you need to be in good physical shape, but you don't need excessive strength. The optimal crew weight is around 100 to 145 kg, so it can be sailed well by both men and women. Youth teams also get along well with the boat. With the appropriate trim options , the boat is easy to sail at 1 to 6 Bft , something more than that by experienced crews. In regattas, the 470 is considered to be a tactically very demanding class, as the differences in boat speed are small and the boat loses little speed in the maneuvers. A good cooperation between the helmsman and the crew is considered essential for successful regatta sailing.

Regatta and races

In the 470 class, regattas for all levels of ability are offered, from association-open races to national championships, continental championships to world championships and Olympic regattas. Age-segregated events are well established, such as junior championships (U19, U22) or masters events for older teams (over 30, over 35, over 50). Ranking lists for the regatta sailors are created and published on both a national and an international level.

Olympic games

The 470 has been in the Olympic class since the 1976 Olympics in Montreal . There the Germans Frank Hübner as helmsman and his bowman Harro Bode surprisingly won the gold medal ahead of Spain, Australia and the favored French. Since the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , the 470 has also been sailed by women's teams.

In 2019 World Sailing decided that from the Olympic Games in 2024 the 470 will be sailed as a "Mixed Two Person Dinghy". The crew thus consists of a man and a woman, and the separate Olympic regattas for men's teams and women's teams are no longer necessary.
