Howhannes Dawtjan

Howhannes Dawtjan (born November 25, 1983 in Gyumri ) is a former Armenian judoka who was third in the 2009 World Championship. At European championships he won two silver and two bronze medals.

Athletic career

The 1.73 m tall Howhannes Dawtjan fought in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kilograms. At the European Championships in Belgrade in 2007 he reached the final with a victory over the Azerbaijani Nijat Shikhalizada , which he lost to the Russian Ruslan Kishmakow . In April 2008 he finished seventh at the 2008 European Championships . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against North Korean Kim Kyong-jin . In April 2009, Dawtjan was defeated at the 2009 European Championships in the opening fight to the Russian Arsen Galstjan . At the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam Dawtjan lost in the quarter-finals against the Japanese Hiroaki Hiraoka . In the hope round he defeated the Czech Pavel Petřikov , in the battle for bronze he defeated the Iranian Vahid Sarlak . In November 2009 Dawtjan won the Armenian Championships.

At the European Championships 2010 Davtjan was defeated in the quarter-finals to the Russian Beslan Mudranow . In the hope round he defeated Pavel Petřikov, he lost the battle for bronze to the Italian Elio Verde . In 2011 he reached the final of the Grand Slam in Paris , where he was defeated by the Uzbek Rishod Sobirov . Six months later he was defeated by Hiroaki Hiraoka in the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Paris , after his defeat against the Ukrainian Heorhij Santaraja he finished seventh. With a semi-final victory over Santaraja at the European Championships in 2012 Dawtjan reached the final, where he was defeated by Beslan Mudranow. At the Olympic Games in London he won the first three rounds against the German Tobias Englmaier , the Azerbaijani Ilgar Mushkiyev and the Kazakhs Jerkebulan Qossajew . In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Elio Verde and in the hope round to the Frenchman Sofiane Milous .

In 2014 at the European Championships in Montpelier, Dawtjan lost to Georgian Amiran Papinashvili in the quarter-finals , and he won the battle for bronze against Orxan Səfərov from Azerbaijan. In June 2015, the European Championships took place as part of the European Games 2015 in Baku. After losing to the Spaniard Francisco Garrigós in the quarter-finals and the Swiss Ludovic Chammartin , Dawtjan finished seventh. A year later at the European Championships in Kazan, he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Italian Elios Manzi . With victories over the Dutchman Jeroen Mooren and the Turkish Bekir Özlü , Dawtjan won again bronze. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Dawtjan first defeated the Austrian Ludwig Paischer and then retired against Beslan Mudranow. At his last European Championship participation in 2017 in Warsaw , Dawtjan was eliminated in his opening match against Frenchman Cédric Revol .
