Amiran Papinashvili

Amiran Papinashvili (born June 17, 1988 in Batumi ) is a Georgian judoka . He was European champion in 2013.

Career

The 1.62 m tall Amiran Papinashvili competes internationally mostly in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kilograms. In team competitions he starts at half light weight up to 66 kilograms.

At the end of 2008 he won his first Georgian championship title, followed by the second title in 2015. In 2009 he won his first World Cup tournament in Tbilisi. At the European Championships 2011 he was defeated in the quarter-finals by the Ukrainian Heorhij Santaraja and finished fifth after another defeat against the Russian Arsen Galstjan . The following year he was defeated in the semifinals of the European Championships 2012 in Chelyabinsk to the Russian Beslan Mudranow . With a victory over the Austrian Ludwig Paischer , Papinashvili secured a bronze medal. In the 2012 Olympic Games came Betkili Schukwani to Georgia.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 2013 , he defeated the Briton Ashley McKenzie in the semifinals and the Swiss Ludovic Chammartin in the final . Four months later, the European champion lost his semifinals at the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro against the Mongol Daschdawaagiin Amartüwschin and the battle for bronze against Orxan Səfərov from Azerbaijan. At the end of the week the Georgians won the title in the team competition. At the European Championships in Montpellier in 2014 , Papinashvili won the quarter-finals over Armenian Howhannes Dawtjan and in the semi-finals against Ilgar Mushkiyev from Azerbaijan. In the final he was defeated by the Russian Beslan Mudranow. Four months later, at the 2014 World Championships in Chelyabinsk, he lost to the Mongolian Ganbatyn Boldbaatar in the semi-finals . With a victory over the Israeli Artiom Arshanski , Papinashvili secured a bronze medal. The 2015 European Championships were held as part of the 2015 European Games in Baku. Papinashvili was defeated by the Dutchman Jeroen Mooren in the quarter-finals , with victories over the German Tobias Englmaier and the Spaniard Francisco Garrigós , the Georgian fought his way to the bronze medal. After four medals in a row, Papinashvili finished fifth at the 2016 European Championships . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he defeated the Japanese Naohisa Takato in the quarter-finals and lost to Beslan Mudranow in the semi-finals. The Georgian lost the fight for a bronze medal against the Uzbek Diyorbek Oʻrozboyev , as he did in the semifinals, through penalties.

At the European Championships in 2017 and 2018 , Papinashvili took fifth place. But at the 2018 World Championships in Baku, he reached the medal ranks again. After his semi-final defeat against the Russian Robert Mschwidobadze , he won the battle for a bronze medal against Karamat Huseynov from Azerbaijan. The 2019 European Championships were held as part of the European Games in Minsk, Papinashvili received a bronze medal.
