Orxan Səfərov (born August 10, 1991 in Lənkəran ) is an Azerbaijani judoka . He was world championship runner-up in 2017 and world championship third in 2013. At European championships, he won the silver medal in 2015 and 2016 and in 2017 a bronze medal.

Athletic career

From 2011 to 2017, the 1.71 m tall Səfərov fought in the extra light weight , the weight class up to 60 kilograms. In 2012 he won his first Azerbaijani national championship title. Shortly thereafter, he won a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships.

At the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, he lost to the South Korean Kim Won-jin in the quarterfinals . In the hope round he defeated the Kazak Jeldos Smetow and in the battle for bronze he won against the Georgian Amiran Papinashvili . At the European Championships in 2014 he lost to the Russian Beslan Mudranov in the semifinals , then he also lost the battle for bronze against the Armenian Howhannes Dawtjan . Two weeks later he defeated his compatriot Vugar Shirinli in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Baku . At the 2014 World Championships , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the South Korean Choi In-hyuk . Two months after the World Championships, he won his second Grand Slam title at the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi with a final victory over the Mongols Daschdawaagiin Amartüwschin .

In 2015 he finished seventh at the Grand Slam in Baku. In the six weeks later as part of the 2015 European Games discharged in Baku European Championships Səfərov defeated the Spaniard in the semifinals Francisco Garrigós , in the final he defeated Beslan Mudranow. Of the four medals that Azerbaijan won in judo competitions, three medals went to visually impaired judokas, and Orxan Səfərov's medal was the only one in an Olympic class. A year later at the European Championships in Kazan in 2016 , Səfərov reached the final with a victory over the Italian Elios Manzi , in the final he was defeated by the French Walide Khyar . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he reached the semi-finals with a win against Brazilian Felipe Kitadai . After defeats against Jeldos Smetow and against the Japanese Naohisa Takato , Səfərov finished fifth.

At the beginning of 2017 Orxan Səfərov took third place at the Grand Slam tournaments in Paris and Baku. At the European Championships in Warsaw he was defeated in the quarterfinals to the Russian Robert Mschwidobadze . After beating Turkey's Bekir Özlü in the Hope Round, Səfərov defeated Amiran Papinashvili in the battle for bronze. Three weeks later, Orxan Səfərov and Bekir Özlü met again in the final of the Islamic Solidarity Games in Baku and Səfərov won. At the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, Səfərov defeated Kazak Jeldos Smetow in the quarter-finals and Uzbek Diyorbek Oʻrozboyev in the semi-finals . In the final he was defeated by Naohisa Takato.

At the end of 2017, Orxan Səfərov switched to half-light weight for most tournaments, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. At the 2018 European Championships in Tel Aviv he was defeated by Adrian Gomboc from Slovenia in the semi-finals and Dzmitryj Scherschan from Belarus in the battle for bronze . At the World Championships in Baku he went to the extra light weight and was eliminated in the round of 16 against Amiran Papinashvili. Also at the European Championships in 2019 he was eliminated in the second round of the extra light weight against the Dutchman Jorre Verstraeten . At the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi he returned to the half-lightweight division in October 2019 and was only defeated in the final by the Italian Manuel Lombardo .
