Jorre Verstraeten

Jorre Verstraeten (born December 4, 1997 in Leuven ) is a Belgian judoka . He was third at the 2019 European Championships.

Athletic career

Verstraeten was third in the 2013 Cadet World Championships in the weight class up to 50 kilograms. In 2014 he won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 55 kilograms at the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing. Verstraeten has been fighting in the weight class up to 60 kilograms, the lightest weight class for men in judo, since 2016. In 2017 Verstraeten won the silver medal at the Junior European Championships in Maribor. In 2018 he was Belgian national champion for the first time. In 2019 he won the Grand Prix tournament in Tel Aviv. In 2019 the European Championships were held as part of the European Games in Minsk. Verstraeten lost to the Spaniard Francisco Garrigós in the quarter-finals . With victories in the hopes over the French Luka Mkheidze and Walide Khyar, he won a bronze medal. At the 2018 and 2019 World Championships , he was eliminated in the second round.
