Elio Verde

Elio Verde (born September 10, 1987 in Aversa ) is a former Italian judoka . In 2009 he won bronze at the World Championships, in 2010 and 2011 at the European Championships.

Athletic career

Until 2012, the 1.65 m tall Elio Verde mostly competed in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kilograms. He was fifth in the U20 European Championships in 2005 and seventh in the U20 World Championships in 2006. In 2007, he won the first of four Italian championship titles.

In 2008 Verde reached the final at the U23 European Championships and lost to the Czech Pavel Petřikov . At the European Championships in 2009 he was defeated in the semifinals to the Russian Arsen Galstjan and in the battle for bronze to the Austrian Ludwig Paischer . Two months later, Elio Verde won the Mediterranean Games . At the World Championships in Rotterdam he defeated Pavel Petřikov in the quarterfinals, but lost in the semifinals against the Japanese Hiroaki Hiraoka . In the battle for bronze he defeated the Georgian Nestor Chergiani .

In 2010 Verde lost to French Sofiane Milous in the semi-finals of the European Championships in Vienna , and won the battle for bronze against Armenian Howhannes Dawtjan . At the World Championships in Tokyo, Verde lost to the Uzbek Rishod Sobirov in the quarterfinals and later in the battle for bronze to the Russian Arsen Galstjan. Galstjan also won the quarter-finals at the 2011 European Championships in Istanbul . With wins in the hope round against Ilgar Mushkiyev from Azerbaijan and the German Tobias Englmaier, Verde won a bronze medal. In 2012 Elio Verde finished seventh at the European Championships . At the Olympic Games in London Elio Verde defeated Howhannes Dawtjan in the quarterfinals and lost to Hiroaki Hiraoka in the semifinals. In the battle for bronze he was defeated by the Brazilian Felipe Kitadai .

After the Olympic Games, Verde finally switched to half-light weight, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. His best placement in the next few years was seventh at the 2015 World Championships . At the end of 2017 he ended his active career and became a judo trainer.
