SegaSonic the Hedgehog is a pseudo-3D platformers Run - Computer game that developed by Sega AM3 and for the first time in Japan in June 1993 as Arcade was released. The game was also distributed in minimal numbers in the USA and Europe and has three-dimensional gameplay with an isometric camera view, as does Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island , first published in 1996 , and Japanese voice acting .

The three playable characters are Sonic and debutants Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. Aside from Mighty's appearance in Knuckles' Chaotix (1995), the two characters didn't reappear in Sonic Mania Plus until 2018 .

The characters are controlled with a trackball . Up to three players can control all three characters at the same time. There are three revisions of the machine, called A, B and C. Otherwise, the game was never published and thus never made the home console audience, although on the Sega 32X and with the Sonic Gems Collection was planned, but according to Yuji Naka due the trackball control has been discarded.

action

Dr. Eggman was able to capture Sonic, Mighty and Ray and brought them to Eggman Island , where they break out of their captivity. The trio defy all dangers and traps to work their way to Eggman Tower . When they reach the control room, Dr. Eggman pushes the button that initiates the self-destruct sequence of the entire island, but Sonic, Mighty and Ray manage to escape from the island in time for the explosion. Dr. Eggman himself escapes as well, but due to lack of fuel in his Egg Mobile, he crashes into the sea.

Gameplay

In SegaSonic the Hedgehog , the player can choose to take control of Sonic the Hedgehog, Mighty the Armadillo or Ray the Flying Squirrel, whereby all three can be controlled identically. With the trackball the characters can be steered in the respective direction and with the single action button they jump with the Spin Attack . The goal is to reach the end of the game without losing life. If you lose your life, the game ends and you have to start over. On your way you have to avoid many dangers, traps and chasms, escape columns of fire, climb ladders and dive under water. You can collect rings that are counted after completing a level section and earn points.

The game consists of seven stages ( Volcanic Vault , Icy Isle , Desert Dodge , Trap Tower , Landslide Limbo , Wild Water Way and Eggman's Tower ) that can be defined as levels . The fifth stage is followed by a boss fight. At the end of the game, which is reached after approximately 15 minutes of playing, the game's credits appear.

synchronization

SegaSonic the Hedgehog has Japanese synchronization, making it the first Sonic game with voice output. The voice actors were no longer considered for future games (voice output in Sonic games was only available again in 1998 in Sonic Adventure ).

New releases and successors

It was planned to port SegaSonic the Hedgehog to the Sega 32X , but this was no longer pursued due to the failure of the system. The game was also planned as part of the Sonic Gems Collection , but this was also not implemented because, according to Yūji Naka, trackball control was difficult to implement on conventional controllers.

The game also has no direct successor, although Sonic Labyrinth (1995, Sega Game Gear ) and Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island (1996/1997 Sega Mega Drive , Sega Saturn and PC ) use the same, isometric pseudo-3D camera view.

After Mighty was otherwise only playable in Knuckles' Chaotix (1995, Sega 32X ), the characters Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel only reappeared in Sonic Mania Plus (2018).
