Originally, Mr. Needlemouse was the name of the new character, but this was discarded in favor of the shorter and more memorable name Sonic . For over a decade, Sega's Sonic was head-to-head with Nintendo's mascot Mario .

Sonic's middle name in the comic book series produced by Archie Comics and published only in the United States is Maurice. He got his name from his grandfather - even if it is never mentioned whether he is his maternal or paternal grandfather. In addition, Sonic is not his actual name there, just a nickname, but his real nickname is never mentioned. Later he officially changed his name to Sonic there too.

Sonic's age is 15 in most continuities, however, in the Archie comics, he turns 17 as the plot progresses. He also has two birthdays in the series Sonic the crazy hedgehog and once in Sonic Underground , but it is not mentioned how many years he will be there. Sonic's birthday is also celebrated in the game Sonic Generations, but it is not clear whether it is actually his 16th birthday. In the Sonic Underground series, Sonic's birthday is March 4th, whereas in the Archie comics it is 162 day of the year, i.e. June 10th or 11th. Sonic's creation day is June 23, as that is the date his first game was released.

Sonic has set himself the goal of preventing the mad Doctor Eggman from conquering the world with the help of his machines. But his greatest passions are racing and speed itself.

Skills and Super Shapes

With the help of the seven Chaos - Emeralds Sonic can be in Supersonic turn. In the US comics, he can also use seven super emeralds instead under other circumstances , such as in the adaptation of the comics from Sonic Adventure .

As Super Sonic, Sonic's spines stand up and his blue color is replaced by a gold one. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles , his eye color also changed from green to dark red. Super Sonic is invulnerable, faster than normal, and partly able to fly. However, Super Sonic uses up a ring every second, and when he runs out of rings he transforms back into Sonic. Furthermore, Sonic can transform other characters into their super forms, provided they have one. This happened in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) with Shadow , as well as in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) with Shadow and Silver. In Sonic Heroes, however, Tails and Knuckles only got a protective shield.

In Sonic 3 & Knuckles he was also able to use the power of the super emeralds to become Hyper Sonic. Hyper Sonic is identical to Super Sonic. Instead of the golden color, however, it has a rotating color scheme in this form, which seems to change between the colors of the Super Emeralds. He is also able to make another jump in any direction in the air, while a flash of light briefly illuminates the screen and destroys all robots on the screen, except the boss enemy . In the Fleetway comics, the transformation to Super Sonic was described as a kind of intoxication , in which Sonic has a great destructiveness and cannot control himself.

In Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007), Sonic is also able to use the power of seven of the world rings that appear in the game, making him Darkspine Sonic. When Sonic transforms into Darkspine Sonic, his coloration becomes a little darker and two white stripes run from his eyes to the tip of his central spine. His pupils disappear so that only the white-filled outlines of the eyes can be seen. He wears gold rings on his gloves and shoes and the red fabric of his shoes turns blue. In addition to the capabilities of Super Sonic, Darkspine Sonic is also able to slow down or speed up the time. Sonic's other abilities include, in addition to running at the speed of sound, since the very first game, the spin attack and the spin jump . 1992 was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 of the Spin Dash ( Spin Dash ) added, the Insta-shield of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) was not adopted permanently. With the 3D era, new techniques such as the homing attack , the light speed dash or chaos control came into use. In Sonic Unleashed he can turn into a werewolf or Werigel . He can fight by mysteriously extending his arms.
