Sonic Adventure 2 ( jap. :ソニックアドベンチャー2, Hepburn : Sonikku Adobenchā TSU), with new releases now also Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is a 3D Jump 'n' Run - computer game , which of Sonic Team developed by Sega for the first time in the USA on June 18, 2001 for the Sega Dreamcast . The game was released in Japan and Europe on the exact same day June 23, 2001 to mark Sonic's 10th anniversary.

It has six controllable main characters in two continuously intersecting story lines and mainly three different gameplay focuses. The game impressed fans as well as the trade press, but it was the last Sonic game on a Sega console. In December 2001 it was the first Sonic game on a Nintendo console at the same time as Sonic Advance , when it was under the Name Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the Nintendo GameCube was published and could achieve significantly better sales there. The revision published in 2012 for PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Steam revised Sonic Adventure 2 Battle again, but was again only called Sonic Adventure 2 , as some content should be purchased via paid DLC.

With this game, the new characters Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat were introduced. It has a multiplayer mode and the Chao Garden is included again.

It is the successor to Sonic Adventure (1998) and the predecessor to Sonic Heroes (2003).

action

Dr. After studying the diary of his long-dead grandfather Professor Gerald Robotnik , Eggman decides to break into a high-security wing of GUN and use a Chaos Emerald and the password “Maria” to free a creature called Shadow the Hedgehog . This calls on Dr. Eggman with no real explanation to show up with more Chaos Emeralds on the ARK space station before disappearing. At first, Shadow single-handedly continues to search for the Chaos Emeralds himself, causing trouble and turmoil, attracting the attention of the police, who mistakenly mistake Shadow for Sonic . When the innocent Sonic is arrested for this, he escapes from his helicopter transport and races through the city, but then meets Shadow, who impresses Sonic with his chaos control skills before the police finally arrest Sonic and lock him up on Prison Island . Shadow remembers his past incompletely, but most of all he can't shake the memory of a shot girl named Maria. Believing it would have been her last request before her death, Shadow wants to wipe out humanity.

Meanwhile, Knuckles is arguing with a bat lady named Rouge the Bat, who, in search of jewels, wants the Master Emerald for herself. Dr. Eggman steps in and wants to steal the Master Emerald during the dispute, but when Knuckles notices this, he splits the Master Emerald again into several splinters in order to prevent the theft at the expense of looking for the individual splinters again. However, this time Rouge also starts looking for the splinters and also pursues Dr. Eggman. When he reached the ARK space station for the first time, Rouge was able to follow him unnoticed and saw how Shadow Dr. Eggman tells about the super weapon Eclipse Cannon aboard the ARK, which is able to destroy the world with the power of all Chaos Emeralds. Rouge reveals himself and wants to meet Dr. Connect Eggman and Shadow. To gain their trust, she hands over the third Chaos Emerald.

Tails has found out about Sonic's arrest and cannot believe that Sonic is said to have committed crimes, which is why he leaves for Prison Island in Tornado 2 . On the way he runs into Amy Rose , who happens to be Shadow, Dr. Eggman and Rouge, mistaking Shadow for Sonic. After a fight between Tails and Dr. Eggman can rescue Tails and Amy Sonic from prison. Dr. Eggman plans to find the three Chaos Emeralds on the island and then to blow up the island and Sonic. Sonic and Shadow fight in the jungle until Dr. Eggman Shadow informed about the imminent detonation via radio after Rouge was able to get hold of the three Chaos Emeralds. All characters manage to escape in time and Dr. Eggman already has six of the seven Chaos Emeralds.

Dr. Eggman has a video broadcast worldwide in which he announces that he will destroy the planet in 24 hours and as a show of power he is destroying the moon with the power of his previous Chaos Emeralds, causing a worldwide mass panic, while a 24-hour timer is constantly counting down. He then contacts the President and demands submission of the world within these 24 hours, otherwise he will direct the Eclipse Cannon on the planet after the time limit has expired. Sonic and Tails rush to the president during the conversation and find out that Dr. Eggman made contact from the ARK space station. But also Dr. Eggman learns that the final Chaos Emerald is in Tails' possession. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy follow Rouge to Dr. Eggman's secret base and climb aboard a rocket that takes everyone into space. As a precaution, Tails made a real-looking Chaos Emerald fake and handed it over to Sonic.

Knuckles accidentally lost his Master Emerald Shards and must find them again in space. There he meets rouge and a fight ensues. But when Rouge threatens to fall into a lava basin, Knuckles saves her. Rouge then gives her splinters to Knuckles, who restores the Master Emerald. On board the ARK space station, Dr. Eggman take control of Amy. While Dr. Eggman and Tails fight, Sonic appears. For release, Dr. Eggman the last Chaos Emerald and Sonic wants to hand over the fake, but Dr. Eggman sees through the trick, locks Sonic in a capsule and lets it explode in space. While Tails and Amy mourn Sonic's supposed death, Sonic was able to escape just before the explosion by using Chaos Control on the fake Chaos Emerald. A fight ensues between Sonic and Shadow, whereupon Sonic destroys the Eclipse Cannon , whereby everyone learns that Sonic has survived. But Dr. Eggman was able to snatch the last Chaos Emerald and uses it for the Eclipse Cannon , which unexpectedly has the consequence that a video of Professor Gerald Robotnik in captivity, which was recorded 50 years ago, is broadcast worldwide.

In the video broadcast worldwide, the arrested Professor Gerald Robotnik shows himself eaten away with hatred and announces that the world will end in about 27 minutes, since at that moment the seven Chaos Emeralds were united on the space station ARK, which means that the space station is full Force hits the planet, destroying all life on the planet. In this way he also wants to make sure that no one can survive on the space station, which is not in the spirit of Dr. Eggman is. He presented Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Rouge the digital diary of his grandfather, which explains that his work on the "ultimate form of life" was unsettled by the government and that his research facility was forcibly stormed to Shadow, who was described as the ultimate form of life to capture. Prof. Gerald Robotnik's granddaughter and Dr. Eggman's cousin Maria Robotnik died while Shadow watched her death helplessly.

Through Rouge's idea, the protagonists come up with the idea of neutralizing the power of the Chaos Emeralds with the power of the Master Emeralds in order to prevent the collision and the end of the world. To do this, however, the Master Emerald must be brought to the core of the space station while time is running out. This is how Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman and Rouge together, only Shadow refuses to help as he can achieve his goal of wiping out humanity. When Amy talks to him, he remembers that the dying Maria Robotnik asked Shadow to the contrary, to give the people a chance. So he also goes to the core and catches up with Sonic and Knuckles when they have reached the core. But the base for the Master Emerald, an exact copy of Angel Island , is guarded by the prototype of the ultimate life form, the Biolizard. Shadow fights the Biolizard so Knuckles can put the Master Emerald in the socket, which stops the energy of the Chaos Emeralds. Instead, Biolizard uses all its energy to keep the space station on a collision course with the planet from space. Sonic and Shadow use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic and Super Shadow and fight the Biolizard from space just before the collision. This is defeated and immediately before the collision, Super Sonic and Super Shadow jointly use Chaos Control to teleport the space station, which has penetrated the earth's atmosphere, back into orbit. Mankind sees the salvation of the world in the sky and celebrates the prevented end of the world, while Shadow left his powers and he apparently sacrificed himself to give humanity a chance. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Dr. Eggman and Rouge are relieved, but also mourn Shadow.

Gameplay

In Sonic Adventure 2 you can choose between the "Hero Story" and the "Dark Story" at the beginning, to see the plot either from the point of view of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles (up to the destruction of the Eclipse Cannon ) or from the point of view of Shadow, Dr. Eggman and Rouge (up to Dr. Eggman's collection of all seven Chaos Emeralds). If both story lines are played through, the final story “Last Story” (from Professor Gerald Robotnik's video broadcast) is activated. Without overworlds, the game continues in addition to the film sequences from one action stage to the other, in which each action stage provides a prescribed character with the corresponding gameplay. All characters have in common that they move in three-dimensional worlds. When touched, the golden rings can be collected; If the pawn takes damage, it loses the rings. If the character takes damage without having rings or falls into a deadly abyss, he loses an extra life, of which you have three at the start of the game (only Tails and Dr. Eggman have an energy bar, regardless of the number of rings). The item boxes can contain an extra life, five rings, ten rings, 20 rings, a protective shield, a magnetic protective shield, temporary increased speed, temporary invulnerability, healing or an explosion that defeats all current enemies on the screen. Checkpoints in the form of lanterns mark the reset point in the event of a loss of life. When you solve an action stage for the first time , you receive a so-called emblem. In the unlockable trial mode you can get up to five emblems in each action stage, in which you collect an additional 100 rings, track down a chao using Mystic Melody (all characters can find in one of their stages), the stage within a time limit and in clearly difficult variant solves. In order to get all 180 emblems, you also have to complete all missions at rank A and solve tasks in the Chao Garden , but then get access to a new 3D variant of the Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog .

Sonic & Shadow

Sonics and Shadows gameplay consists of reaching the goal of each level in the form of a large ring. The levels are designed for speed and often have several places to grind , sometimes over longer periods of time. Sonic and Shadow have the Spin Attack when jumping , with which many opponents can be defeated by touch. With the jump button in the air, the homing attack can be carried out, with which you steer directly towards opponents in the immediate vicinity, while the somersault is also possible at the push of a button. Early in the game, Sonic receives the Light Shoes and Shadow receives the Air Shoes , with which they automatically follow a series of rings with the Light Dash . In addition, Sonic and Shadow can find the Ancient Light to have the Light Attack and the Flame Ring to destroy metal boxes with their Somersault . Only Sonic can find the Bounce Bracelet to learn the Bounce Attack . With the Flame Ring and the Bounce Attack , Sonic can also find the Magic Gloves , with which opponents can be turned into balls that can be carried around.

Sonic contests the six action stages City Escape , Metal Harbor , Green Forest , Pyramid Cave , Crazy Gadget and Final Rush , as well as boss fights against Bigfoot, Shadow, Egg Golem and the final against Shadow, as well as part of the Cannon Core of the "Last Story" with the Finalhazard fight as Super Sonic and the unlockable Green Hill Zone . Shadow contests the four action stages Radical Highway , White Jungle , Sky Rail and Final Chase , as well as boss fights against Hot Shot, Sonic and the final against Sonic, as well as the Biolizard fight in the "Last Story" and the Finalhazard fight as Super Shadow .

Tails & Dr. Eggman

Tails' and Dr. Eggman's gameplay consists of reaching the goal of the respective level in the form of a large ring in their Cyclone and Egg Walker machines , with which they can target several opponents at the push of a button and then shoot them by releasing the button, like E-102 Gamma in Sonic Adventure , This time there is no time pressure and defeated opponents do not give a time bonus. For this, Tails and Dr. Eggman over an energy bar and when this has been completely emptied, they lose an extra life and have to start from the last checkpoint, whereby the energy can be replenished with healing from item boxes. Often keys or switches have to be hit remotely or doors and gates have to be opened by force. Both attack from a distance with the Volkan Cannon and in close combat with the Propeller Punch . Tails can use the booster and Dr. Eggman find the jet engine to float in the air with the machines. The Bazooka for Tails and the Large Cannon for Dr. Eggman allow metal boxes to be destroyed, while both characters can find the Laser Blaster , which, like E-102 Gamma before, allows them to target even more enemies with the touch of a button. Only Dr. Eggman can track down the Protective Armor , which expands its energy bar.

Tails will contest the five action stages Prison Lane , Mission Street , Route 101 , Hidden Base and Eternal Engine , as well as two boss fights against Dr. Eggman, also part of the Cannon Core of the "Last Story". Dr. Eggman contests the five action stages Iron Gate , Sand Ocean , Lost Colony , Weapons Bed and Cosmic Wall , as well as two boss fights against Tails and one against the Egg Golem, as well as part of the Cannon Core of the "Last Story".

Knuckles & Rouge

Knuckles' and Rouges gameplay consists of collecting the Master Emerald Shards, Chaos Emeralds, or Keys in the same way. There are always three objects hidden in the respective levels and a radar shows how close you are to an object (unlike in Sonic Adventure , the objects must be found in a fixed order, so the radar can only show one object at a time) Monitors at levels up to three can give more or less clear tips on where or how to look for the items. If all three objects, which are located in different, randomly generated locations each time the game is played, are found, the level is successfully completed. With the jump button in the air, Knuckles and Rouge can float forward and climb walls. They are also able to attack at the push of a button with the Punch Attack or the Screw Kick and progressively with the Spiral Upper or the Drill Drive . If the Shovel Claw or Pick Nails are found, knuckles and rouge can also dig in the ground or on walls in earth or sand. From this point in time, the searched items can also be buried, and buried item boxes can also be found in this way. Only Knuckles can find the Air Necklace to breathe underwater, which is optional but very helpful. The Hammer Gloves for Knuckles and the Iron Boots for Rouge can be used to destroy metal boxes, while once they have been found, Knuckles' sunglasses and Rouge's Treasure Scope can be put on at the push of a button to locate secret treasures.

Knuckles contests the five action stages Wild Canyon , Pumpkin Hill , Aquatic Mine , Death Chamber and Meteor Herd , as well as boss fights against King Boom Boo and Rouge, as well as part of the Cannon Core of the "Last Story". Rouge contests the five action stages Dry Lagoon , Egg Quarters , Security Hall , Route 280 and Mad Space , as well as boss fights against Flying Dog and Knuckles, as well as part of the Cannon Core of the "Last Story".

development

After the completion of the international version of Sonic Adventure , Sega announced a successor and a spin-off ( Sonic Shuffle ) to Sonic Adventure on October 4, 1999 . The development team traveled to Yosemite National Park and the San Francisco Bay Area to collect ideas, but mainly gathered inspiration from the streets of San Francisco , the location of the Sonic Team USA. Chief developer Yūji Naka announced that the development was easier this time because you were familiar with the hardware and knew how to use it as best as possible.

Sonic Adventure 2 was first seen at E3 2000 , at that time still with the theme tune of the predecessor, with only Sonic, Dr. Eggman and Knuckles as playable characters and Shadow still had the development name "Terios". New trailers and screenshots were released on May 30, 2001, and it was announced that it was the 10th anniversary game and the last Sonic game for the Sega Dreamcast .

Dataminers were able to reconstruct some of the unused content of the game after the game was released, for example voiceclips for defeats in boss fights, voice actor outtakes and even minute-long audio recordings of an unrealized cutscene immediately before the final boss fight against the Final Hazard when the president and his secretary lost hope tries to reassure him.

Multiplayer mode

The game has a multiplayer mode that offers more content on the Nintendo GameCube version than on the Sega Dreamcast version, but in the HD version from 2012 it has to be purchased as a paid DLC. Two players compete against each other in the different gameplay variants.

In the speed passages of Sonic and Shadow, the characters Amy Rose and Metal Sonic are also available for selection in the shortened action stages known from the single player mode , while the gameplay of Tails and Dr. Eggman wars on its own multiplayer arenas and the Chao Walker and, depending on the version, either Big the Cat (Sega Dreamcast) or the Dark Chao Walker (since Nintendo GameCube) can be played. In Knuckles and Rouge, the first to find all the Master Emerald splinters of the well-known Action Stage wins , while Tikal and Chaos Zero from the previous game can also be played for the first and only time in the Sonic series.

Chao Garden

Like Sonic Adventure , the game has an additional mode in which you can maintain and develop Tamagotchi- like beings. These beings, so-called Chao (singular and plural equal) stay in three different, unlockable Chao gardens (Normal, Heaven and Hell) and have properties (flight, swimming, running, strength and endurance) that are evident in the main game Improve collected objects ("chaos drives" capsules and small animals) and fruits that can be found in the garden. Chao develop into neutral, hero or dark chao, depending on which characters the player is caring for them. Chao can compete against each other in Chao races or the new Chao Karate, but the player's influence is limited to cheering on his character, the rest depends on their status values. On the Sega Dreamcast you could also load a chao onto the VMU and accompany it on the way, help it and win fruit. If you linked two VMUs using Chao Adventure, you could also let the Chao compete against each other or pair them. The Chao kindergarten was new, where you could play your chao or have a doctor examined it, but there was also a so-called black market that offered rare fruits or decorative items for in-game currency.

You can reach the Chao Gardens if you find a Chao key in an action stage with one of the six characters in the main game and reach the goal without losing your life. Only in the Chao Garden are Tails and Dr. Eggman can be played without their machines on foot. The Chao Garden can then be entered from the level selection menu.

On the Nintendo GameCube you could connect your Nintendo GameCube with a Game Boy Advance with a special connection cable called "DOL-011" and thus connect your Chao figures between the Chao Garden and the Tiny contained in Sonic Advance , Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Pinball Party Transfer Chao Garden as desired.

New releases and successors

After the initial release of Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle 2001, the game was re-released in 2012 in HD and 16: 9 for the online stores of PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 and Steam , with the multiplayer mode being offered as a paid DLC.

Other main games of the series in 3D were in the episode Sonic Heroes (2003), Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Unleashed (2008), Sonic Colors (2010), Sonic Generations (2011), Sonic Lost World (2013), Sonic Boom: Lyrics Rise (2014) and Sonic Forces (2017).

Sonic Adventure 2 was generally positively rated and, especially compared to its predecessor, there were significantly fewer game errors and camera problems. The varied and high-quality soundtrack was highly praised, but the gameplay also focused more on elements that promote fun. The plot, the smooth 60fps and the multiplayer mode were also received positively. The graphics within the level were praised, only the character models appeared a bit old-fashioned in in-game cutscenes.

The game was also a success from a commercial point of view, but not when it was first released. On the Sega Dreamcast , Sonic Adventure 2 has sold a total of 109,300 times and was thus far below expectations, but this is due to the late release within the lifespan of the Sega Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle sold 2.56 million copies on the Nintendo GameCube, making it 8th among the best-selling GameCube games. The game has been downloaded 108,000 times on Xbox Live Arcade and 614,000 times on Steam.
