Sonic Adventure ( jap. :ソニックアドベンチャー, Hepburn : Sonikku Adobenchā), with new releases now also Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut is a 3D Jump 'n' Run - computer game , which of Sonic Team developed by Sega for the first time in Japan on December 23, 1998 for the Sega Dreamcast was released.

It is the first main game of the Sonic game series , which was implemented completely in 3D and has six controllable main characters, all with different gameplay and characteristics, whose plot continuously intersects. The game impressed fans as well as the trade press, set standards for the series, is a role model for subsequent 3D Sonic games, established voice actors for the characters, introduced the Chao Garden and is the most successful game for the Sega Dreamcast.

From this game on, an international agreement was reached on the name Dr. Eggman , with the character previously known outside of Japan as Dr. Robotnik was called. Dialog relatively early in the game explains that while his real name is Dr. Ivo Robotnik reads, but Sonic then becomes more joking than Dr. Titled Eggman. From this point on he will only be used under his nickname Dr. Eggman called (comparable to Tails , whose correct name is Miles Prower, but he is only called by his nickname).

In 2003 the game was released for the Nintendo GameCube under the name Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut with many changes in graphics and content as well as twelve unlockable Sega Game Gear sonic games , a PC version followed in 2004 . The revision, published in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and in 2011 for Steam , revised Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut again, but again called itself only Sonic Adventure , as some content should be purchased via DLC for a fee.

The direct successors are Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and Sonic Heroes (2003).

action

Dr. Eggman found ancient scrolls deep in the jungle of the Mystic Ruins and then destroyed the Master Emerald on the floating island of Angel Island when his guardian Knuckles the Echidna was careless. As the documents said, inside the Master Emerald was a being called Chaos, which has now been released, but Angel Island falls back into the sea without the power of the Master Emerald. Since Chaos is supposed to get stronger with each Chaos Emerald, Dr. Eggman can now find the seven Chaos Emeralds with his new creature, in order to then conquer the world with the help of its final form. Shortly afterwards, there is a confrontation of chaos with the police in the city of Station Square , who are helpless in the face of chaos despite firearms. Sonic rushes over by chance and can defeat Chaos at first.

To find the seven Chaos Emeralds, Dr. Eggman new robots like the E-100 series. Your task is to track down an unusual frog that has swallowed a Chaos Emerald. This is the frog named Froggy, who then tries to escape. His best friend Big the Cat tries to find Froggy and begins the search. A robot named Zero locates a Chaos Emerald in a Flicky and pursues it, but the said Flicky gets into Amy Rose , who calls him Birdie and protects him, with which she messes with the robot Zero. Meanwhile, Knuckles travels all over the place looking for the individual fragments of the destroyed Master Emerald in order to reconstruct it.

Sonic happens to watch his best friend Tails crash on the biplane plane called the Tornado . The plane is destroyed, but Tails remains unharmed. Tails says that he wanted to use a Chaos Emerald as an energy source, but that it was apparently too much energy for the tornado . The two want to go to Tails' workshop in the Mystic Ruins , but meet Dr. Eggman, who manages to take his Chaos Emerald from Tails and hand over Chaos, whereupon he reaches his next level. Sonic and Tails now want the remaining Chaos Emeralds in front of Dr. Eggman find and have success in Windy Valley and Casinopolis , but Dr. Eggman appears again and can take one of these two Chaos Emeralds from them by temporarily putting Sonic and Tails into a deep sleep with a gas. In the hotel, Dr. Eggman pursued by Knuckles, who defeats Chaos in his form with two Chaos Emeralds before Dr. Eggman tells Knuckles that Sonic is also targeting the Master Emerald Shards. Knuckles begins to doubt and wants to confront Sonic.

Sonic and Tails find a Chaos Emerald in Ice Cap before they meet Knuckles and misunderstandings lead to a fight. Dr. Eggman takes advantage of the situation to steal Sonic's last two Chaos Emeralds and transform Chaos into his form with four Chaos Emeralds. This can be defeated again, but Dr. Eggman reveals his flying fortress to Egg Carrier and flees. Sonic and Tails fly after the Tornado 2 in the new plane , but are shot down and separated by the Egg Carrier's defense system . While Sonic meets Amy and Birdie until they are carried off by Zero to the Egg Carrier , Tails tries to find his way around more confidently and can start Tornado 2 again with a Chaos Emerald . He picks up Sonic at Red Mountain and in the second attempt the two manage to land on the Egg Carrier .

The robot E-102 Gamma is supposed to take the captured Amy the Flicky Birdie. However, this continues to talk to E-102 Gamma until he frees Amy and Birdie and his creator Dr. Eggman is malicious. Shortly afterwards there is a fight between Sonic and E-102 Gamma, until Amy intervenes and parting ways. E-102 Gamma decides to wipe out the entire E-100 series, thus removing it from submission to Dr. Redeem Eggman. So he finds and destroys E-103 Delta, E-104 Epsilon and E-105 Zeta, but the search for E-101 Beta continues. Dr. Eggman manages to steal the Chaos Emeralds from Froggy and Birdie, so that Chaos now has six Chaos Emeralds. With Sonic's help, Big the Cat can free Froggy from Chaos' body. Big then uses Tails' Tornado 2 with the last Chaos Emerald as a drive to get from the Egg Carrier back to the Mystic Ruins . Sonic also defeats Chaos in his form with six Chaos Emeralds and then follows Dr. Eggman in his base in the Mystic Ruins . Knuckles arrives shortly after and has to defeat Chaos again, but finds the last splinters of the Master Emerald, with which he can restore the Master Emerald again. Knuckles will also take the six Chaos Emeralds to Angel Island . Amy tries to help Birdie find his parents and defeats the robot Zero, who was constantly chasing her. E-102 Gamma finds its last brother modified as the E-101 mkII and in the final battle both robots are destroyed, whereby E-102 Gamma achieves its goal of wiping out all current E-100 robots. The two destroyed robots release the flickies inside, who turn out to be Birdie's parents, whereupon Birdie says goodbye to Amy.

A mysterious light, which increasingly directed all six characters, repeatedly showed them scenes from the past, in which Knuckles' earlier people, the Echidna, guarded the Master Emerald. Sonic follows the light into ancient ruins to learn a terrible prophecy that Perfect Chaos will destroy the world with all seven Chaos Emeralds. Then Sonic invades Dr. Eggman's base to defeat him again. Dr. Eggman escapes to Station Square and wants to detonate a bomb there, but Tails defuses it in time. In the Mystic Ruins , Dr. Eggman on Chaos, who was able to steal the Chaos Emerald in Tornado 2 , which landed here with Big the Cat, but Chaos attacks Dr. Eggman on. Knuckles finds Dr. Eggman injured on Angel Island , where Chaos sneaks up unnoticed and also takes the other six Chaos Emeralds. With all seven Chaos Emeralds, Chaos reaches its final form Perfect Chaos, only to completely flood and destroy the metropolis Station Square shortly afterwards .

Through the time travel with the mysterious light, Sonic understands what once happened. The Echidna girl named Tikal watched peacefully with the Chao creatures and Chaos over the Master Emerald, but the leader of the Echidnas, Tikal's father Pachacamac, wanted to abuse the power of the Master Emerald for wars. He went so far that he let his soldiers overrun Tikal and the Chao, which angered Chaos and this attacked the soldiers and Pachacamac. As a result, chaos was locked into the Master Emerald and Tikal was turned into a light that no one should recognize. When Sonic realizes that the light is Tikal, the light changes back to Tikal, but they are faced with the angry Perfect Chaos. Tikal demands that he be locked up again, but Sonic doesn't want Chaos to be locked in again for a long time full of anger and hatred. With the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds his friends can gather, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic and faces the gigantic Perfect Chaos. Super Sonic manages to transform him back and calm him down. After Chaos is peaceful again, he returns to his time with Tikal and the Chao. Sonic and his friends conclude the story in the completely ruined city.

Gameplay

In Sonic Adventure , the player takes control of the blue hedgehog Sonic at the beginning in a three-dimensional platformer. As the game progresses, five more characters will be unlocked, each with their own skill and gameplay focus. If all six story lines are played through, the final story is unlocked. Starting with the GameCube version, there is also another character that can be unlocked. All characters have in common that they move in three-dimensional worlds. The three upper worlds Station Square , Mystic Ruins and Egg Carrier connect the individual action stages. When touched, the golden rings can be collected; If the pawn takes damage, it loses the rings. If the character takes damage without having rings or falls into a deadly abyss, he loses an extra life, of which you have three at the start of the game. The item boxes can contain an extra life, five rings, ten rings, a random number of rings, a protective shield, a magnetic protective shield, temporary increased speed, temporary invulnerability or an explosion that defeats all current enemies on the screen. Checkpoints in the form of lanterns mark the reset point in the event of a loss of life. So-called emblems are hidden at certain points on the upper worlds, which are also retained after the first completion of an action stage. The Action Stages also contain optional side quests in the trial mode, with which you can earn further emblems in order to unlock further modes or content. Finding all emblems gives you access to the character Metal Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic's gameplay consists of reaching the goal of each level , which can be Tails' crash site, the location of a Chaos Emerald or a capsule with animals. Most of the levels are designed for speed and often have gimmicks such as an action-packed snowboard passage. When jumping, Sonic has the Spin Attack , with which many opponents can be defeated by touch. With the jump button in the air, the homing attack can be carried out, with which Sonic steers directly towards opponents in the immediate vicinity, while the spin dash is also possible at the push of a button. Early in the game, Sonic receives the Light Speed Shoes , with which he automatically follows a series of rings with the Light Speed Dash with a charged Spin Dash . The Light Speed Attack works in a similar way with the item Ancient Light in designated places. If the Crystal Ring is found, the Spin Dash needs less time to charge for the two actions . Sonic's story contains ten action stages in the order Emerald Coast , Windy Valley , Casinopolis , Ice Cap , Twinkle Park , Speed Highway , Red Mountain , Sky Deck , Lost World and Final Egg , plus the two so-called sub game levels Sky Chase Act 1 and 2, as well as boss fights against Chaos 0, Egg Hornet, Knuckles, Chaos 4, E-102 Gamma, Chaos 6 and Egg Viper.

Miles Tails Prower

Tails' gameplay consists of races, mostly against Sonic, but also against Dr. Eggman on reaching the goal of each level. Tails has the Spin Attack when jumping , with which many opponents can be defeated by touch. With the jump button in the air, Tails can fly in the air for a limited time. At the push of a button, Tails can also attack the ground with the Tail Rotation Attack . If the Rhythm Badge is found, the Continuous Tail Rotation can be carried out permanently and with the Jet Anklet Tails can fly faster. Tails' story includes five action stages in the order Windy Valley , Casinopolis , Ice Cap , Sky Deck and Speed Highway , plus the so-called sub game levels Sand Hill , Sky Chase Act 1 and 2, as well as boss fights against Egg Hornet, Knuckles, and Chaos 4, E-102 Gamma and Egg Walker.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles' gameplay consists of collecting the Master Emerald Shards. Three splinters are always hidden in the respective levels and a radar shows how close you are to a splinter (unlike in Sonic Adventure 2 , the splinters can be found in any order, which means that the radar can also display several splinters at the same time) Tikal can act as a mysterious light and indicate the direction to the next splinter. If all three splinters, which are in different, randomly generated locations each time the game is played, are found, the level has been successfully completed. Knuckles has the Spin Attack when jumping , with which many opponents can be defeated by touch. With the jump button in the air, Knuckles can float forward and climb walls. He is also able to hit and attack with the Punch Attack at the push of a button . If the Shovel Claw is found, it can also dig into soil or sand in the ground or on walls. From this point on, the fragments you are looking for can also be buried, and you can also find buried item boxes. If the Fighting Gloves are found, Knuckles can charge his attacks and execute a Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack that defeats several opponents at once. Knuckles' story includes five action stages in the order Speed Highway , Casinopolis , Red Mountain , Lost World and Sky Deck , as well as boss fights against Chaos 2, Sonic, Chaos 4 and Chaos 6.

Amy Rose

Amy's gameplay consists of escaping from the robot Zero and reaching the goal in the respective levels in the form of a balloon. Amy can jump, but does not have the spin attack . However, she has her Piko Piko Hammer , with which she uses the Hammer Attack while standing, strikes in the air with the Jump Attack and can reach higher places while running using the Hammer Jump . If the Warrior Feather is found, it can also attack with the Spin Hammer Attack , while with the Long Hammer item the actions have a larger radius. Amy's story includes three action stages in the order Twinkle Park , Hot Shelter and Final Egg , as well as a boss fight against the robot Zero.

Big the Cat

Big's gameplay essentially consists of fishing in the respective levels. Big can jump, but doesn't have the spin attack . To do this, he can lift and carry heavy objects such as cars or rocks. At the push of a button, Big casts his fishing rod and when the bait lands in the water, it can be gently moved in the water. If Froggy or a fish bites, it is necessary to pull it ashore by pressing a button, with a bar indicating when the target is escaping or the line is tearing. Big's goal is to fish his friend Froggy, but he can also fish any other fish whose weight is specified in the catch. If the Life Belt is found, Big can move better underwater. The Power Rod gives him a longer fishing line, and there are four lure upgrades that allow Big to catch bigger fish. Big's story includes four action stages in the order Twinkle Park , Ice Cap , Emerald Coast and Hot Shelter , as well as a boss fight against Chaos 6 (Big only has to fish Froggy out of Chaos' watery body).

E-102 gamma

E-102 Gamma's gameplay consists of reaching the goal of each level within the low time limit. E-102 Gamma must constantly shoot enemies in order to increase the remaining time again. E-102 Gamma can jump, but does not have the spin attack . At the push of a button he targets opponents, if the button is released, the targeted opponents are shot down and defeated. The more opponents are defeated with a targeted charge, the higher the time bonus achieved. If the Jet Booster is found, the E-102 Gamma can glide in the air, while the Laser Blaster allows it to target even more enemies at the same time. E-102 Gamma's story includes five action stages in the order Final Egg , Emerald Coast , Windy Valley , Red Mountain and Hot Shelter , as well as boss fights against E-101 Beta, Sonic, E-103 Delta, E-104 Epsilon, E-105 Zeta and E-101 mkII.

Super Sonic

Super Sonic's Story will be unlocked once all six previous story lines have been played through. First you control Sonic with his known properties until the final boss fight against Perfect Chaos, which is fought as Super Sonic. Super Sonic can float above the water surface of the flooded city of Station Square if it moves fast enough. If Super Sonic approaches Perfect Chaos fast enough, he can cause him damage. Super Sonic's Story doesn't contain any action stages, just two boss fights against Perfect Chaos.

Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic couldn't be unlocked on the Sega Dreamcast version, but only since the Nintendo GameCube version by collecting all of the game's emblems or purchasing it as DLC content. Metal Sonic has no story and can only play the action stages of Sonic via trial mode. Essentially, it is identical to Sonic's gameplay, but represents an alternative costume with new sounds, so to speak.

synchronization

Sonic Adventure was the first game with full synchronization in English and Japanese. Chief developer Yūji Naka also played a small speaking role. The English, female station announcement voice spoke in the follow-up Sonic Adventure 2 the role of the character Rouge the Bat.

development

A big Sonic adventure in 3D was originally planned for the Sega Saturn , which was postponed to the next Sega system Sega Dreamcast with increasing planning and the failure of the console . The already created game world and physics were then reused in the Sega Saturn game Sonic Jam . The new title initially carried the development title Sonic RPG , but then changed to Sonic Adventure . The development team went on excursions to Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, Chichen Itza, Tulum, San Gervasio, Tikal, Uaxactun, Peru, Cusco, Machu Picchu and Pachacamac to collect ideas that are reflected in the end product, especially in the Mystic Ruins upper world and in Reflecting Sand Hill . Some of the photos taken on the excursions were scanned and used as textures for the game.

Yuji Uekawa was given the task of renewing the designs of the characters and making them fresher. This is how the new, larger and more grown-up looking Sonic was born, the design of which was used by the other characters. The strongest Amy Rose affected by the redesign. In addition, many new characters were added and Yuji Naka's team tried to create a deeper and more complex story than ever before. For the game's soundtrack, Jun Senoue, who has created soundtracks in several Sonic games since Sonic the Hedgehog 3, composed 40 complete songs with his band Crush , as well as the theme song "Open Your Heart".

On August 22, 1998, Sonic Adventure was officially presented for the first time at the Tokyo International Forum after the rumors about a 3D Sonic condensed and even screenshots of the game were leaked in advance by an unknown developer. The game should be released in 1998 for the Sega Dreamcast, which happened on December 23, 1998 in Japan at the urging of Sega's business department. After the release, the team continued to work on the game and fixed many game bugs, glitches and camera problems that were criticized by the players and the specialist press, and new level sections, mini-games and the Chao Garden were added. It was not until September 1999 that a significantly improved Sonic Adventure appeared in the USA and in October 1999 in Europe. This version was so different from the Japanese original that the game was published again in Japan in October 1999 under the name Sonic Adventure International .

Eggman called (comparable to Tails , whose correct name is Miles Prower, but he is only called by his nickname Tails).

Chao Garden

Since the 1999 version, the game has an additional mode in which you can maintain and develop Tamagotchi- like beings. These beings, so-called Chao (singular and plural equal) stay in the various Chao gardens and have properties (flight, swimming, running, strength and endurance) that can be improved by animals and fruits collected in the main game. Chao can compete in chao races. The player's influence is limited to cheering on his character, the rest depends on their status values. On the Sega Dreamcast you could also load a chao onto the VMU and accompany it on the way, help it and win fruit. If you linked two VMUs using Chao Adventure, you could also let the Chao compete against each other or pair them. There were additional functions via the built-in browser. You could ask the “Chao Doctor” an e-mail with questions about raising a Chao, upload and download the Chao (“Chao Daycare”), a “Fun Room” and a possibility to upload the high scores from the Chao Race (“Race Rankings ").

On the Nintendo GameCube you could connect your Nintendo GameCube with a Game Boy Advance with a special connection cable called "DOL-011" and thus connect your Chao figures between the Chao Garden and the Tiny contained in Sonic Advance , Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Pinball Party Transfer Chao Garden as desired.

Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut ( Japanese : ソ ニ ッ ク ア ド ベ ン チ ャ ー デ ラ シ ク ス, Hepburn : Sonikku Adobenchā Derakusu) is a new edition of Sonic Adventure with some new features and bonus content. The game was released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube and in 2004 for the PC . After the sales figures of the port of the Sega Dreamcast game Sonic Adventure 2 for the Nintendo GameCube called Sonic Adventure 2 Battle exceeded Sega's expectations, it was decided to port the first Sonic Adventure to the Nintendo GameCube. The character models were overhauled, textures changed, the frame rate increased to 60fps, sound effects partially improved, levels revised in detail, cutscenes made skippable, an adjustable camera installed and maps added to the overworlds overview. There was also Metal Sonic as a playable character, a mission mode, innovations in the Chao Garden and by collecting the emblems you could unlock up to twelve Sega Game Gear Sonic games.

The Nintendo GameCube and retail PC versions (from 2004, not the Steam version from 2011) have these Sega Game Gear Sonic games, which can be unlocked in the following order:

Order of the Sega Game Gear sonic games included on the GameCube and Retail PC versions:

The PC version of Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut was included with the Sega Game Gear games in the Sonic PC Collection (2009). In 2010, new implementations followed for the online stores of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and in 2011 for Steam , which implemented Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut in HD, but called the game again only Sonic Adventure , although it was based on the DX version , which is why the naming of the individual versions can be misleading since then. While the Sega Game Gear collection was completely removed, the Missions and Metal Sonic as a playable character were offered this time as paid DLC. In February 2011 the Dreamcast Collection was released for Xbox 360 and Steam , which contains the latest Sonic Adventure version as one of four games.

In 2019, Takashi Iizuka, who was primarily responsible for Sonic Adventure at the time and currently President of the Sonic Team, announced that he would like to completely remake Sonic Adventure . As a result, new, again composed by Jun Senoue, official versions of isolated Sonic Adventure soundtracks appeared.

successor

The direct successor of the game is Sonic Adventure 2 , which appeared in 2001 for the 15th Sonic anniversary for the Sega Dreamcast , but also as the last Sonic release on a Sega console. In the same year, a revised version called Sonic Adventure 2 Battle was released for the Nintendo GameCube . Other main games of the series in 3D were in the episode Sonic Heroes (2003), Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Unleashed (2008), Sonic Colors (2010), Sonic Generations (2011), Sonic Lost World (2013), Sonic Boom: Lyrics Rise (2014) and Sonic Forces (2017).

Sonic Adventure was generally positively rated and impressed especially when it was first released with graphics, sound and implementation. The elaborate and numerous cutscenes with professional voice actors were praised, but individual voices and the lip synchronicity were criticized. The gameplay was received positively, although game errors and camera problems are clearly noticeable. The more recent publications were rated much more negatively on average, it was criticized that the game had aged badly. In 2003 , the N-Zone rated the GameCube version with 59%.

The game was also a success from a commercial point of view. Sonic Adventure sold 2.5 million copies on the Sega Dreamcast alone, making it the number one top-selling console game. Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut sold 1.27 million copies on the Nintendo GameCube, making it 26th on this console. The game has been downloaded 203,000 times for Xbox Live Arcade and 613,000 units have been sold on Steam.
