Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball is a Action - computer game , which by Sega Technical Institute as well as polygamous developed by Sega for the first time in Europe on 15 November 1993, the Sega Mega Drive was released. You play Sonic mostly in spherical form and maneuver him through pinball machine- like levels. The game was published for several systems with different graphics, but largely identical content.

An indirect successor is Sonic Pinball Party from 2003.

action

The renegade scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik built his new fortress on the active volcano Mt. Mobius in order to be able to use the forces of nature and the magma for his own purposes. He controls and regulates volcanic activities with the help of the Chaos Emeralds . Sonic and Tails fly towards the fortress on the Tornado biplane , but are met by Dr. Robotnik's laser defense beams hit and crash. Sonic manages to escape to the fortress sewer area and begins to infiltrate it.

After Sonic has collected the Chaos Emeralds, he releases the forces of nature to destroy the fortress. In addition, Dr. Robotnik held up in his escape vehicle. Tails is able to take Sonic back into the tornado with a skilful flight maneuver and thus escape the destruction.

Gameplay

In Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball , the player takes control of the blue hedgehog Sonic, who this time only has ground under his feet in exceptional cases. Usually Sonic is in his spin attack form and is thrown accordingly with flipper levers that the player can operate at the push of a button. While in the air, Sonic can easily be steered in any direction. If he falls into a deadly abyss, he loses an extra life, of which you have three at the start of the game. If you collect 20,000,000 points that come about through all possible actions, you get another extra life.

The game consists of four zones ( Toxic Caves , Lava Powerhouse , The Machine and Showdown ), which can be defined as levels in which you have to find and collect the Chaos Emeralds. At the end of each zone there is also a fight against Dr. Robotnik and one of its deadly machines. After the first three zones there is also a bonus stage in which you can earn additional points.

8-bit version

In contrast to the jump-'n'-runs , in which the 8-bit variants have to be viewed as completely separate games, the Sega Game Gear and Sega Master System versions of Sonic the Hedgehog spinball as much as possible true to detail copies with weaker graphics and sound as well as an adapted bonus stage . In Japan neither the Game Gear nor the Master System version were ever published; the USA also waived the master system variant.

development

After the completion of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 , the Sega Technical Institute was divided into an American team, which started developing Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball , and a Japanese team, which was supposed to develop Sonic the Hedgehog 3 . Inspired by passages in the Spring Yard Zone and the Casino Night Zone , developer Peter Morawiec came up with the idea for Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball .

The goal from Sega's point of view was a publication for the Christmas business 1993. Developer Katsuhiko Sato was flown in from Japan to the USA for the timely completion. Due to technical problems, the programming language was changed from assembler to C , which was rather uncommon at the time of the Sega Mega Drive, but ensured the timely release.
