Heroes

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic is a blue hedgehog that has the ability to run at the speed of sound , hence its name ( English sonic , ' sound '). He can also curl up and thereby destroy objects and enemy characters. Sonic's age is 15 years on most continuities. In the Archie comics , he turns 17 as the plot progresses. It appears for the first time in the arcade game Rad Mobile (1991) as an ornament hanging from the rearview mirror of a car. The first game in which he is the protagonist is Sonic the Hedgehog (1991).

Sonic has set himself the goal of preventing the mad Doctor Eggman from conquering the world with the help of his machines. But his greatest passions are running and speed itself. Although Sonic is generally a bit quick-tempered and his patience breaks very quickly, he refuses to help anyone. One of his greatest strengths is that he always remains true to his principles. His great weakness is the water, as Sonic cannot swim and his speed in the water decreases considerably, which is why he is terrified of it.

Skills and Super Shapes

With the help of the seven Chaos Emeralds , Sonic can transform into Super Sonic. In the US comics, he can also use seven super emeralds instead under other circumstances , such as in the adaptation of the comics from Sonic Adventure .

As Super Sonic, Sonic's spines stand up and his blue color is replaced by a gold one. Super Sonic is invulnerable, faster than normal, and partly able to fly. However, Super Sonic uses up a ring every second, and when he runs out of rings he transforms back into Sonic. Furthermore, Sonic can transform other characters into their super forms, provided they have one. This happened in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) with Shadow and Silver, and something similar happened in Sonic Heroes (2004) with Tails and Knuckles.

In Sonic 3 & Knuckles he was also able to use the power of the super emeralds to become Hyper Sonic. In this form he is able to make another jump in any direction in the air, while a flash of light briefly illuminates the screen and destroys all robots on the screen, with the exception of the boss enemy .

Other mutations are Darkspine Sonic in Sonic and the secret rings (2007) through the 7 World Rings , Sonic the Werehog in Sonic Unleashed (2008) through Dark Gaia , and Excalibur Sonic in Sonic and the Black Knight (2009). In Sonic Colors (2010) and Sonic Lost World (2013) he was also able to use the power of small extraterrestrial beings, the Wisps , to temporarily transform himself into another being. In one episode of the anime Sonic X , through the power of false chaos emeralds as well as anger and hatred, he very briefly took on a kind of dark superform, commonly referred to as Dark Sonic or Dark Super Sonic .

Miles "Tails" Prower

Since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992) Sonic has been accompanied by the fox Miles Prower, called Tails . He is eight years old and extremely intelligent for his age. He has a high level of technical understanding and is an excellent pilot.

The rotation of his two tails allows Tails to fly and, unlike Sonic, swim. Sonic's abilities have often been of use. However, he also has the weakness of being a little naive and inadvertently disclosing secrets to Dr. To divulge Eggman. Since Sonic Adventure , Tails has also tried to be more independent and find his own way.

Knuckles the Echidna

The red Echidna Knuckles first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and is the last of his tribe. His first own game is Sonic & Knuckles (1994). In Sonic Jam (1997) his age is given as 15 years. His job is to guard the Master Emerald on Angel Island . When he first appeared, he was still a rival to Sonic. But after hearing the lies of Dr. Eggman saw through, he fought from now on at Sonic's side. Knuckles has tremendous strength and fighting skills. With his rock-hard fists and eponymous knuckles, he can smash rocks, dig and climb up vertical walls. He is generally portrayed as stubborn, a little impatient, and occasionally gullible, as he sometimes falls for Eggman's tricks. Knuckles is one of the good guys, but still has a rivalry with Sonic.

Amy Rose

Amy Rose is a pink hedgehog who first appeared on Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993), where it was made by Metal Sonic for Dr. Robotnik was kidnapped. Amy has been madly in love with Sonic ever since Sonic saved her from the clutches of evil. Unfortunately for her, he does not return this love. In Sonic Adventure (1999) and Sonic Adventure 2 (2001), Amy played a major role in the story, putting the robot E-102 Gamma and Shadow the Hedgehog on the right track. It was first playable in Sonic Championship / Sonic the Fighters , where it was called Rosy the Rascal . From Sonic Adventure on , she became more quick-tempered and now knew how to defend herself. For this she uses her oversized pico-pico hammer.

Amy is very friendly and helpful, but if there is any contradiction, she quickly blows up and shows the others who is wearing the pants. So she always provides authority. She leaves no stone unturned to further compete for Sonic's favor and loathes Eggman's robot.

Cream the Rabbit

Cream is a six-year-old rabbit girl who first appeared in Sonic Advance 2 (2003), where Sonic helped her rescue her mother Vanilla from Eggman.

Cream is Amy Rose's sidekick , just like Tails is with Sonic. Cream grew up like a princess and is also the only character whose mother is known. She is friendly and at the same time naive. In addition, she thinks fighting is evil and therefore never fights herself, but lets her Chao Cheese fight for herself. Cream's special ability is that she can fly with her ears. In Sonic Heroes (2004), it was necessary Cheeses twin brother Chocola save.

Team Chaotix

The so-called Team Chaotix originally consists of the ninja-chameleon Espio , the cranked bee Charmy Bee, the crocodile Vector as well as the armadillo Mighty and the robots Heavy and Bomb and appeared for the first time in Knuckles' Chaotix (1995), which appeared for the Sega Mega 32X . In Sonic Heroes Team Chaotix returned, only of Espio, Charmy and Vector back and counted to Sonic's friends, even though they for appropriate fee in Sonic Heroes were willing to follow the instructions of Dr. Eggman or Metal Sonic to follow.

Vector is the head of the group and has a great weakness for money. He never rejects paid work, but does not get involved in dirty things . In his friendliness, he also likes to do small jobs for free, e.g. B. is about finding lost toys for crying children. He also loves music more than anything, his Walkman is also his trademark. He is very powerful and can crush Eggman's robot with his jaws with ease.

Espio is the group's spy. He is very serious and careful and never approaches things rashly. He is also a ninja and has appropriate skills, such as B. Throwing Shuriken throwing stars, which he constructs himself. With his Chameleon camouflage trick he can make himself invisible and thus get past enemies unseen. This makes him an indispensable member of the Chaotix group.

Charmy Bee is a six year old bee. Unlike his comrades, he is neither particularly strong, nor particularly smart, or fast. He is very pushy and therefore the perfect antithesis to the cautious, calm Espio. Charmy is generally in a good mood when someone makes him angry, but Charmy also uses his sting from time to time. He also has a good feel for things that have disappeared. As a bee he can of course also fly unhindered.

More allies

Other characters on the good side include Big the Cat , a seriously overweight cat with a penchant for fishing. Especially in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes , Big tries to find his best friend Froggy , a simple frog. Tikal appeared in Sonic Adventure . She was locked in the Master Emerald in the past, but also returned to the past at the end of the adventure with the monster Chaos. Since Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic has often been accompanied by Omochao , a chao that is a kind of tutorial. There are many unanswered questions about Blaze the Cat . In Sonic Rush (2005) and Sonic Rush Adventure (2007) it comes from another world, in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) it comes from the future, while in Sonic Generations (2011) it belongs to the present. Silver the Hedgehog is a future character from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), where he was out to kill Sonic. This was given to him by Mephiles the Dark, who turned out to be the real villain and final boss. Since then, Silver has been fighting on Sonic's side. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 it is Sonic's task to save Princess Elise , in Sonic and the Secret Rings Genie helps Shara the blue hedgehog. The raccoon girl Marine played a role in Sonic Rush Adventure. In Sonic Unleashed, Sonic is accompanied by Chip , who turns out to be god at the end of the adventure. The companions Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel from the arcade classic Sega Sonic the Hedgehog (1993) have been forgotten, with Mighty again playing a leading role in Knuckles Chaotix. Together with Fang the Sniper , Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polarbear from Sonic the Fighters, they reappeared as a cameo in Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania (2017).

Adversary

Dr. Eggman (until 1999 Dr. Ivo Robotnik)

Dr. Ivo Robotnik is a mad scientist and the archenemy of Sonic and besides his grandfather Gerald Robotnik the only main human character in the video game series. He always has plans to conquer the world and found his own Eggmanland empire (then Robotnikland ). Since Sonic the Hedgehog (1991) he has been trying to take over the world by transforming robots into tiny animals. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to Sonic & Knuckles, Robotnik tried to use the Death Egg to usurp world domination. In the mega-drive adventures, Robotnik kept building bigger and more dangerous robots, which Sonic can defeat all of them. In Sonic Adventure, Dr. Robotnik then used his new nickname Dr. Eggman , who from then on was adopted as his nickname in all subsequent games. In the Japanese original, he wore it from the start.

Dr. Robotnik's intelligence is enormous; he is said to have an IQ of 300. But despite his intelligence, the doctor tends to outbursts of anger and extremely childish behavior when something goes wrong. In the Fleetway comics there is a story about the genesis of the actually good Dr. Ovi Kintobor (read backwards), who was made evil by the negative power of the Chaos Emeralds. But this contradicts itself above all with the appearance of the Robotnik family from Sonic Adventure 2.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Shadow is a black hedgehog. He was led by Dr. Eggman's grandfather Dr. Gerald Robotnik was created as the "ultimate form of life" and was developed by Dr. Eggman freed 50 years later in Sonic Adventure 2. His memory is sketchy. At first he believed Dr. Eggman's cousin Maria asked him for revenge on humanity, but Shadow remembered in time that he should give humanity a chance. Thereupon he supported Sonic substantially in preventing the crash of the Space Colony ARK on earth. He then disappeared and was believed dead by everyone. In Sonic Heroes, Rouge seemed to have found Shadow, who was believed to be dead, but at the end of Sonic Heroes she came across a camp owned by Dr. Eggman, which had hundreds of Shadows in their capsules, each of which could have been the real one. All but the Shadow, who helped defeat Metal Sonic, were destroyed, however, in Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) some reappeared under the name "Shadow Android" and it was here that these androids were clarified by Dr. Eggman were created. In Shadow the Hedgehog , Shadow continued to try to remember his past, which he eventually succeeded in doing. Since then he has vowed to let the past rest and live his own life. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), like Rouge, he worked as a part-time spy for the military organization GUN, but then returned to the fight against Dr. Engage Eggman and a new enemy, Mephiles the Dark .

Shadow is on par with Sonic in many ways. He can keep up with Sonic's speed, transform himself with the seven Chaos Emeralds and also has many of his abilities in other ways. However, its best known is that it can harness the power of chaos. With Chaos Control he can control and manipulate time and space, and with skills like Chaos Spear and Chaos Blast he can use this power offensively or defensively. As the ultimate form of life, Shadow does not age and therefore does not have a real biological age. Characteristically, however, Shadow is rather the exact opposite of Sonic. While Sonic is friendly, always in a good mood and helpful, Shadow is calm, serious and reserved. In addition, he usually uses his abilities more to his own advantage, and when he helps, he usually has a different motive than the others. When it comes to his relationship with Sonic, he is usually neutral. He only gets in Sonic's way when he sees him as a threat to his own plans.

Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic is a robot developed by Dr. Eggman was created to destroy Sonic. Outwardly, it looks very similar to Sonic as a robot and can even reach its speed and even overtake it at times. Metal Sonic first appeared on Sonic the Hedgehog CD, where he kidnapped Amy Rose but was defeated by Sonic. Sonic defeated his prototype Silver Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Death Egg. Another version of Metal Sonic called Mecha Sonic reappeared in Sonic & Knuckles and unsuccessfully tried to stop Sonic in the Sky Sanctuary Zone . He even represented the final boss in the Knuckles story by even achieving his super form with Master Emeralds. Metal Sonic was also the final final boss in Sonic Heroes, where he reached his ultimate form but was defeated by Super Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. He also appeared as a rival in various other games, but without taking on a major role there. It has always been a shame for Metal Sonic that he never managed to take out his eternal rival and enemy Sonic.

E-100 robot

In Sonic Adventure, Dr. Eggman created the E-100 robot. E-102 Gamma , who was later converted by Amy, was a playable character and later wiped out his fellow models E-101 Beta , E-103 Delta , E-104 Epsilon , E-105 Zeta, and ultimately himself, while E- 100 Alpha ( called ZERO in the game Sonic Adventure (DX)) is destroyed by Amy. In Sonic Heroes, E-123 Omega was the last model in the series. He is also the only one of them to appear in more than one game: After Sonic Heroes, he was again in combat alongside Rouge in Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog Shadow against evil aside.

Rouge the Bat

Rouge the Bat is a female bat. She is generally rather cunning and selfish and has a great weakness for jewels. She is a treasure hunter and part-time spy at GUN. She first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2, where she and Dr. Eggman and Shadow worked together to get the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds all under the nail while collecting all information about the Ultimate Life Form and passing it on to the military. Neither one nor the other succeeded. Since then she has been working more alone until she found the Shadow believed dead. In addition to Sonic Adventure 2, she was also in Sonic Battle, Sonic Heroes Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Riders (2006), Sonic Rivals 2 (2007), Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (2008), Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity (2008 ), Sonic Free Riders (2010) and Sonic Jump (2012) a playable character.

Forgotten is Fang , the adversary from Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble (1994), who also appeared again in Sonic the Fighters (1996). In Sonic Lost World (2013) the Terrible Six , especially their leader Zavok , cause mischief. Sonic Mania leads the hard-boiled Heavies than Eggman supportive antagonists ordinary robot which by the Phantom Rubin ( Phantom Ruby got special in the original English) skills. Sonic Forces (2017) presents a special feature with the apparent return of Shadow the Hedgehog , Metal Sonic , Chaos and Zavok as antagonists, but these are only VR illusions of the new antagonist Infinite , who uses the phantom ruby as a source of power.
