Sonic and the Black Knight ( jap. : ソニックと暗黒の騎士. English Sonic and the Black Knight ) is a 3D platformers Run - video game , that of Sonic Team developed by Sega for the first time in North America on 3 March 2009 for the Nintendo Wii .

It is a spin-off of the series in which Sonic is drawn into the storybook King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table . As with the predecessor, the control through motion control with the Wiimote is an essential part of the game, although this time the control to the left and right takes place via the control stick of the Nunchuk .

The game is the sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings (2007) , which was also released on the Nintendo Wii .

action

The sorceress Merlina, granddaughter of the great Merlin , is on the run from the black knight King Arthur , who was changed by the sword Excalibur . In her need, Merlina magically summons a hero from another world to her home in the Kingdom of Camelot, and so Sonic ends up on the battlefield. Sonic and Merlina are able to escape and Sonic is given a sword called Caliburn, which advises them to seek out a specific person. That person is Nimue (in the guise of Amy Rose ), who tells Sonic that King Arthur's three subordinates, namely the Knights of the Round Table , Lancelot , Gawain and Parzival (in the guise of Shadow , Knuckles and Blaze) defeated and hers Swords must be snatched away. After this is done, Sonic challenges the black knight and manages to destroy him.

Sonic hands Excalibur over to Merlina, who then reveals herself to be malicious, shrouds the kingdom in darkness and protects herself and the castle with a barrier. Sonic and the Knights of the Round Table travel to different ends of the kingdom in order to contain the darkness. Then Sonic can go through the barrier and get to Merlina, who became the Dark Queen. This turns out to be too powerful, destroys Sonic's sword Caliburn and seriously injures Sonic. Then Nimue, Lancelot, Gawain and Parzival appear, who use the power of their swords to conjure up the true Excalibur sword from the ruins of the Caliburn. This transforms Sonic into the golden Excalibur Sonic, who defeats the Dark Queen and can free the kingdom from darkness.

After her defeat, Merlina returns to her original form. It was she who created an illusion of the black knight to pursue their plans. Caliburn recalls that the Knights of the Round Table choose their new king, after which Sonic is made king. At the end you see the book King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table lying on a table, while Sonic tells Amy about his adventures up to the appointment as king, but she is angry that this is the reason why Sonic forgot their date .

Gameplay

In Sonic and the Black Knight , the player takes control of the blue hedgehog Sonic in a three-dimensional platformer. Sonic runs by itself and the player can use the control stick to move the character left or right, jump or brake at the push of a button. Sonic always carries the Caliburn sword with him, with which he can carry out various attacks with certain Wiimote movements. Rings and apples can be collected along the way.

The game consists of 13 action stages ( Misty Lake , Camelot Castle , Deep Woods , Titanic Plain , Crystal Cave , Molten Mine , Faraway Avalon , Knights Passage , Shrouded Forest , Great Megalith , The Cauldron , Dragon's Lair and Dark Hollow ) that can be used as Levels can be defined. You have to master tasks in different levels in order to unlock new tasks and levels. If you master the tasks, the story moves forward. In the course of the plot you also unlock the characters Lancelot, Gawain and Parzival, who have different skills with their own swords. In the multiplayer mode, up to four players can choose from up to twelve characters. In addition to the well-known characters of the single player mode, Sonic, Lancelot (Shadow), Gawain (Knuckles) and Parzival (Blaze), there are also Nimue (Amy), Blacksmith ( Tails ), Galahad (Silver), Lamorak (Jet the Hawk), King Arthur as well as Shadow, Knuckles and Blaze in their usual form.

Sonic and the Black Knight received mixed, mostly average ratings, whereby it was mostly positively mentioned that moving the character was no longer controlled by tilting the Wiimote, but by pressing the control stick.

The game's sales figures remained largely unknown. All that is known is that 13,443 copies were officially distributed in Japan and sales in Great Britain must be over 100,000. One assumes rather below average sales figures. This is also supported by the fact that a third part of this spin-off series that was actually planned was ultimately not aimed at.
