Tanja Chiara Frank (born January 24, 1993 in Vienna ) is an Austrian sailor . From 2012 to 2016 she sailed in the Nacra-17 class alongside Thomas Zajac . At the 2016 Summer Olympics , the duo won the bronze medal off the coast of Rio de Janeiro . Since 2017 she has been paired with Lorena Abicht in the 49er FX .

Life

Tanja Frank was adopted as a baby . She has an IQ of 137, which was already noticeable in early childhood. At the age of two and a half, the daughter of a sailing school owner was able to pilot an Optimist class boat on her own . When she was five she sailed her first regattas on Lake Neusiedl . Tanja started school in the second grade of elementary school when she was five and a half, and when she was 14 she began studying biology alongside school. She later switched to nutritional sciences, a field of study to which she remained true to her sailing career.

Tanja Frank sailed for the Sportunion Yachtclub Seewind Jois until 2004 . In general she sails for the ASVÖ Union Yacht Club Neusiedlersee. She is employed by the armed forces as an HSZ athlete and has the rank of corporal .

Nacra 17

In 2011, Frank and Lara Vadlau won the youth world championship in the 420 dinghy . In the same year she secured the silver medal at the Hobie 16 EM in Breitenbrunn . The 2016 Olympic Games in sight, she moved to the newly established catamaran class Nacra 17 . Since the end of 2012 she has formed a duo with Thomas Zajac , formerly runner-up in the tornado world championship . In this pairing, the 1.68 meter tall Tanja Frank took on the power-sapping role of the crew , while Zajac steered . In 2013 the two celebrated remarkable successes, including a second overall place in the European Cup, and even topped the ISAF world rankings for a short time . In 2016 they qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio , where they won the bronze medal and thus provided the first Austrian precious metal in eight years. For this achievement, the duo was named Team of the Year in the election for Austria's Sportsman of the Year.

49er FX

Frank has been sailing in the 49er FX with her childhood friend, Lorena Abicht , since 2017 . She acts again as a taxwoman. In the same year they contested their first major event, the World Cup in Porto . In 2018, the two placed in nine of 13 races in the top ten and won the silver medal at the World Championships of Aarhus . After they had been on the gold course for a long time, they fell back to second place due to a mishap in the decisive Medal Race. This secured the quota for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo .

Tanja Frank is in a relationship with the 49er sailor and former junior world champion David Hussl .
