Peter Gijsbert van Anrooij (born October 13, 1879 in Zaltbommel ; died December 31, 1954 in 's-Gravenhage ), known as Peter van Anrooy , was a Dutch composer and conductor . Van Anrooy grew up in Utrecht .

Education

From 1890 to 1899 he studied piano , violin and composition with Johan Wagenaar at the Toonkunst Muziekschool in Utrecht. He then studied conducting with Willem Kes in Dresden and Moscow , where he also took courses on counterpoint with Sergei Ivanovich Taneyev . In 1900 he composed his best-known work, the Piet Hein Rhapsodie for orchestra , based on the song De Zilvervloot by Joannes Josephus Viotta and Jan Pieter Heye .

Act

He was the conductor of the Groninger Orkest Vereeniging (1905–1910), the Arnhemsche Orkest Vereeniging (1910–1917) and the Residentie Orkest in The Hague (1917–1935). Van Anrooy was known for his steadfastness. For example, on January 5, 1937, at a gala concert in The Hague in the run-up to the wedding of Crown Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard zur Lippe-Biesterfeld , in the presence of the two and Queen Wilhelmina , he refused to conduct the National Socialist Horst-Wessel-Lied . The German diplomats who were present at the ceremony had requested this. The song was played, but Van Amrooy was replaced by Coenraad Lodewijk Walther Boer, conductor of the Royal Military Band.

From 1947 until shortly before his death, Van Anrooy headed the AVRO radio section Inleiding tot muziekbegrip ( introduction to understanding music ).

His grave is in the Oud Eik en Duinen cemetery in The Hague.
