Kathrin Unterwurzacher (born June 5, 1992 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian judoka who competed in the 63 kg weight class. She fought for the judo center Innsbruck .

Career and successes

Kathrin Unterwurzacher started judo in Innsbruck in 1999. In 2007 she took part in international tournaments for the first time. She celebrated her first major success in 2008 when she won the U-17 European Championship in Sarajevo. In 2010 she took third place at the U-20 World Championships in Agadir. After completing her Matura in Sport BORG Innsbruck, she signed up for the Austrian Armed Forces and has since worked as a competitive military athlete.

Unterwurzacher was still very successful and celebrated the U-23 European championship title in 2011 in Tyumen and 2013 in Samokov and the U-23 runner-up European title in 2012 in Prague.

In the following years she established herself in the world class and was able to win a total of 2 Grand Slams and 8 Grand Prixs. At the European Championships in 2016 and 2017 she reached 2nd and 3rd place respectively. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she finished 7th. One of her greatest successes was the 2016 Grand Slam victory in Tokyo.

In total, Kathrin Unterwurzacher was able to fight for 30 top 3 placements in the Seniors by February 2020. On July 8, 2020, Unterwurzacher ended her active career due to persistent health problems.
