Hallenberger Wald nature reserve

The Hallenberger Wald nature reserve with a size of 875.5  hectares is located in the urban area of Hallenberg ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis on September 15, 2004 with the Hallenberg landscape plan. The NSG area has been part of the 2249 hectare FFH area Hallenberger Wald (DE 4817-301) since 2000 . 

Geographical location

The forest area belongs to the natural area Ziegenhelle . The NSG is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park , formerly in the Rothaargebirge Nature Park , west of the Hallenberg core town and south of the Winterberg district of Züschen . It consists of five sub-areas with very different area sizes and is part of the FFH area Hallenberger Wald (DE 4817-301), which includes areas between three of these sub-areas. The NSG lies at 407.4  m ( Nuhne bridge of the B 236 north-north-west of the Hallenberger core city) to 807.5  m above sea level. NHN (northern slope of the Ziegenhelle near the summit) south to southwest of federal highway 236 ; to the east of it is the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht . Unless it is on the western city limits of Winterberg, it is surrounded by the Hallenberger Waldlandschaft conservation area .

These are the five NSG sub-areas (viewed roughly in a west-east direction):

  • Smallest area: Hardwood stock on the Osterkopf ( ), north flank of the Osterkopf near the summit
  • Small area: Hardwood population west of the Ziegenhelle ( ), between the Ziegenhelle and its foothills Urkopf
  • Large area: south of Wallershöhe ( ), south to east slope of Wallershöhe
  • Second largest area: south of the dog's back ( ), u. a. the dog back , Heidenkopf and Pöhlskopf and in Weife tal
  • Largest area: north of the dog's back ( ), u. a. on / on Hundsücken, Ziegenhelle, Wallershöhe, Bächenkopf and Langenberg as well as in the Nuhne valley

Area description

The NSG comprises large areas of red beech forest . There are also areas with ravine forests, alder-ash forests and softwood floodplain forests. There are also smaller areas with grassland and the flood plain of Nuhne . In the NSG species occur as gray-headed woodpecker , black woodpecker , black stork , red kite , Tengmalm and pygmy owl before.

Protection purpose

The NSG was expelled to protect the Hallenberg forest . Furthermore, to contribute to the preservation and development of communities and habitats of wild, partly endangered species, animal and plant species. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area became a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. According to the NSG designation, the area was also designated in order to contribute to the safeguarding of the ecological network Natura 2000 of the European Union within the meaning of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive .
