The nature reserve Heckenlandschaft Braunshausen with a size of 80.3  hectares lies east to northeast and southeast of Braunshausen in the urban area of Hallenberg . It was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) by the Hochsauerlandkreis on September 15, 2004 with the Hallenberg landscape plan. The NSG is part of the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht . It is  cut up by Kreisstraße 54. In the east the NSG goes up to the state border to Hessen . The heather area in the NSG is called Braunshausen Heide ; it was previously designated as a nature reserve Wacholderheide .

Area description

The NSG is extensive grassland with hedges and other trees. In the grassland there are areas with wet and damp grassland. Extensively used hay meadows, lean meadows and poor pastures have types of arboreal grass and semi-arid grasslands . There are also some arable land with species-rich Segetal flora in the NSG. Some spruce plots are also integrated between the grassland areas. Several sources are in the NSG.

To the north of the Lehmkaule area there is a juniper heather , also known as the Braunshauser heath . Particularly in the northern heathland area there are also single bushes and dense bushes complexes. In addition to the junipers, other thorn bushes, mostly black thorns , and isolated trees are mixed in throughout the NSG . Due to the lack of grazing, the area is becoming more and more grassy and bushy. At one point in the northeast of the heather there is a damp hollow.

There is a gorse heather north of the Hamels Nativity area .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the grassland with its species inventory. To contribute to the preservation and development of communities and habitats of wild, partly endangered species, animal and plant species. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area was designated as a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. According to the nature reserve designation, the area was also designated as a nature reserve in order to secure the ecological network Natura 2000 of the EU within the meaning of the Habitats Directive.

Conservation measures

The Association for Nature and Bird Conservation in the Hochsauerlandkreis (VNV), the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Homeland and Cultural Care and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia bought land in the Braunshausen Heide area . The heather is grazed with sheep. The VNV has been doing work in the NSG since 1984 to remove trees so that the heather does not overgrow.
