Geographical location

The NSG Galgenberg is located in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park and in the Medebacher Bucht , a natural area on the edge of the East Sauerland mountains . It spreads on the Galgenberg ( 530.4  m above sea  level ), which rises 2 km southeast of Hesborn and 2 km east of Liesen ; both localities are districts of Hallenberg, whose core town is 3.5 km southwest of the mountain peak. The NSG , located in the European bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht , is surrounded by the landscape protection area Hecken-Grünland -komplex am Galgenberg .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the grassland with its species inventory. To contribute to the preservation and development of communities and habitats of wild, partly endangered species, animal and plant species. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation pointed out that the area was designated as a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”. According to the NSG designation, the area was also designated in order to contribute to the safeguarding of the ecological network Natura 2000 of the European Union within the meaning of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive .
