Jamie Dwyer (born March 12, 1979 in Rockhampton , Australia ) is an Australian hockey player who was five times world hockey player and shot his country to the first Olympic victory in 2004.

Career

He was appointed to the roster of the Australian national hockey team for the first time in 2001. Dwyer is considered one of the best strikers in the world.

In 2002 he was named U23 World Hockey Player of the Year. At the 2003 Champions Trophy , Jamie Dwyer sustained a serious injury, but made his comeback in 2004 as part of a 4-nation tournament in Sydney . His greatest achievement so far was winning the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics when he scored the decisive goal against the Netherlands in the final.

After the Olympic Games, he moved to the Dutch Hoofdklasse at HC Bloemendaal and was named World Hockey Player of the Year for the first time in 2004 (again in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011).

In the spring of 2006 he moved to the Real Club de Polo in Barcelona . At the 2006 World Field Hockey Championship in Mönchengladbach he was voted the best player of the tournament. However, due to an injury, he could not take part in the final against the German national hockey team , which Australia lost 4: 3 to Germany. In 2007 he was re-elected world hockey player.

At the 2008 Olympics , Dwyer won bronze with the Australian team and the following year he was awarded the title of world hockey player for the third time. At the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi, he again led Australia to the final against Germany. The Australian team won the 2010 final with 2-1 goals after losing two finals against Germany at the previous World Cups. As team captain, Dwyer received the World Cup trophy for the Australian team again after 24 years. In May 2010 he announced his move from HC Bloemendaal to Mannheimer HC .
