The rowing competition in the women's double sculls as part of the rowing regatta of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 6th to 11th, 2016 in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon . 26 athletes in 13 teams competed.

The competition, which was held over the Olympic rowing distance of 2000 meters, began with three preliminary runs with four or five teams each. The first, second and third placed teams in the preliminary runs qualified directly for the semi-finals, while the remaining four teams had to go to the repechage . Here the first three teams qualified again for the semi-finals. In the two rounds of the semi-finals, the top three teams qualified for the final, while the fourth to sixth placed teams rowed for 7th to 12th place in the B final. In the final on August 11th, six teams competed for Olympic medals.

The teams qualified for the next round are highlighted in light green.

Magdalena Fularczyk-Kozłowska and Natalia Madaj from Poland won the competition in front of the defending champion Katherine Grainger , who formed a new combination with Victoria Thornley . Grainger and Thornley previously struggled to qualify for nomination in this boat class in the UK. As the third-placed team, Milda Valčiukaitė and Donata Vištartaitė from Lithuania rowed the bronze medal. The 2015 World Champions from New Zealand only reached twelfth place.
