The rowing competition in the women's eighth as part of the rowing regatta of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 8th to 13th, 2016 in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon . 63 athletes in seven teams competed.

The competition, which was held over the Olympic rowing distance of 2000 meters, began with two preliminary runs. The first-placed teams qualified directly for the final, all others had to go to the repechage . Here the first four of five boats qualified for the final. In the final on August 13, six teams competed for Olympic medals.

The teams qualified for the next round are highlighted in light green.

The Americans, who had won all major competitions and titles since 2006, were the big favorites in the competition. In fact, they managed a convincing victory in the final, in which the British selection won silver ahead of the third-placed Romanians.

As the fifth-placed team at the 2015 World Rowing Championships , a Russian rowing team qualified for the women's eighth competition. Inside were Alexandra Fyodorova , Anastasia Karabelschtschikowa , Jelena Lebedeva , Jelena Oriabinskaja , Yulia Popova , Ekaterina Potapowa , Alevtina Sawkina , Anastasia Tichanowa and tax wife Ksenija Volkova reported. In the course of the publication of the McLaren report in the Russian state doping affair on July 18, however, numerous Russian rowers were banned from the Olympic Games by the World Rowing Association, so that Russia could no longer occupy the eighth place. Australia moved up based on the results of the qualifying regatta in Lucerne.

In the Romanian boat, the initially nominated rower Irina Dorneanu was replaced by Iuliana Popa, who was nominated as a substitute rower, a few days before the Olympic Games due to a positive doping test for the drug meldonium .
