The rowing competition in the men's eighth as part of the rowing regatta of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 8th to 13th, 2016 in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon . 63 athletes in seven teams competed.

The competition, which was held over the Olympic rowing distance of 2000 meters, began with two preliminary runs. The first-placed teams qualified directly for the final, all others had to go to the repechage . Here the first four of five boats qualified for the final. In the final on August 13, six teams competed for Olympic medals.

The teams qualified for the next round are highlighted in light green.

In the final, a duel between the world champions from 2013 to 2015 from Great Britain and the defending champions and European and vice world champions from 2013 to 2015 from Germany was expected. However, the British eighth had been weakened in favor of the four-without and had not shown convincing performances at the European Championships and the World Cups . However, the British won the Olympic final confidently ahead of the Germany eighth , in which five Olympic champions rowed from London, including the helmsman. The Dutch, classified as secret favorites, won the bronze medal.

As the fifth-placed team at the 2015 World Rowing Championships , a Russian rowing team qualified for the men's eighth competition. Inside were Artyom Kossow , Ivan Balandin , Alexander Kulesh , Vladislav Ryabtsev , Nikita Morgatschow , Alexander Kornilov , Anton Saruzki , Dmitri Kuznetsov and helmsman Pawel Safonkin reported. In the course of the publication of the McLaren report in the Russian state doping affair on July 18, however, numerous Russian rowers were banned from the Olympic Games by the World Rowing Association, so that Russia could no longer occupy the eighth place. Italy moved up based on the results of the qualifying regatta in Lucerne.
