The rowing competition in the four without a helmsman as part of the rowing regatta of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 7th to 12th, 2016 in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon . 52 athletes in 13 teams competed.

The competition, which was held over the Olympic rowing distance of 2000 meters, began with three preliminary runs with four or five teams each. The first, second and third placed teams in the preliminary runs qualified directly for the semi-finals, while the remaining four teams had to go to the repechage . Here the first three teams qualified again for the semi-finals. In the two rounds of the semi-finals, the top three teams qualified for the final, while the fourth to sixth placed teams rowed for 7th to 12th place in the B final. In the final on August 12, six teams competed for Olympic medals.

The teams qualified for the next round are highlighted in light green.

For the fifth time in a row, the competition in the four-without was won by a British team in which Alex Gregory , Constantine Louloudis , George Nash and Mohamed Sbihi rowed. In the previous year, a differently cast quartet from Great Britain surprisingly did not win the world title, whereupon the British put their strongest rowers in a foursome in order to definitely win this competition. From the defending team from London, however, only Alex Gregory remained. Like four years earlier, the Australians won the silver medal ahead of last year's world champions from Italy.

Ivan Podschiwalow , Georgi Yefremenko , Semen Jaganow and Daniil Andrijenko were initially registered for Russia . Podschiwalow was not allowed to start because of a doping offense in 2007 after the McLaren report was published in the wake of the state doping affair in Russia. Jaganow and Andrijenko, like 15 other Russian rowers, were not allowed to start because they were not examined in a non-Russian doping test between 2011 and 2016. Yefremenko was allowed to start as one of six Russian rowers, but was then replaced in the only remaining boat by the specified team.
