Domenico Montrone
Domenico Montrone (born May 1, 1986 in Modugno ) is an Italian rower who has repeatedly switched between scull and oar boats in his career . In 2016 he won the Olympic bronze medal in the four without a helmsman .
Athletic career
At the Junior World Championships in 2002 he won the silver medal with the Italian eighth . After an eighth place in the double scull in 2003, he won the gold medal in the double scull with Andrea Tranquilli in 2004, his last junior year . In 2006 Montrone made his debut as a member of the Italian double foursome in the Rowing World Cup . At the U23 World Championships in 2006 he won bronze with the eighth, at the 2006 World Championships he finished fourth with the double foursome. In 2007 he finished fourth at the U23 World Championships with a double scull. In the 2008 Olympic year he finished fifth in a double scull at the U23 World Championships. In the same year he won his first international medal in the adult field: At the European Championships in Athens , the boat of the host Greeks won in a four-man without a helmsman ahead of the Italians with Domenico Montrone, Romano Battisti , Sergio Canciani and Andrea Tranquilli.
After a year break, Montrone returned to the international regatta courses. In the World Cup he competed in double sculls and eighth. At the European Championships in 2010 he finished sixth with eighth place, in 2011 he also reached sixth place with the double scull. In 2012, Montrone tried to qualify for the Olympic Games in a single , but did not reach the finals at the regatta in Lucerne. At the European Championships in 2012 in front of a home crowd in Varese, he finished 16th.
In 2013, he finished seventh with eighth at the World Cup in Lucerne, and seventh with the double foursome at the World Championships . In 2014, he rowed eighth to eleventh place at the European Championships , and eighth reached ninth place at the World Championships . In 2015 he started in the World Cup in two without a helmsman and in eight, at the World Championships he took sixth place with eight. In 2016, the Italian eighth finished second at the World Cup opener in Varese, and eighth came third in the Olympic qualification in Lucerne. In Poznan Montrone entered the third World Cup regatta together with Giovanni Abagnale in two without a helmsman and came in sixth.
In 2015, the Italian four-man without a helmsman rowed to the world championship title with Marco Di Costanzo , Matteo Castaldo , Matteo Lodo and Giuseppe Vicino . For the 2016 Olympic Games, Marco Di Costanzo moved to Giovanni Abagnale in the two, Montrone switched to the four. Together with Castaldo, Lodo and Vicino, Montrone won the bronze medal behind the British and Australians in the Italian foursome. At the European Championships 2017 , the Italian four-man without a helmsman won with Di Costanzo, Abagnale, Castaldo and Montrone, and at the end of the season the quartet won silver at the World Championships in Florida behind Australia.
Domenico Montrone, who is around 1.90 m tall, began rowing at CUS Bari in 1997 . He later switched to Fiamme Gialle .
