Giannis Tsilis ( Greek Γιαννης Τσιλης ; born July 15, 1986 in Ioannina , Greece ) is a Greek rower .

Career

Tsilis began rowing in 2000 and was able to take part in international title competitions eight times in junior age groups between 2002 and 2008. In the junior area he succeeded in winning a silver medal in 2004 with Pantazis Tsousis in a two-man without a helmsman . Later in the U23 area, Tsilis won three medals: in 2006 he rowed second place in the four without a helmsman , then he competed for two years in the U23 two without a helmsman with Georgios Tziallas and won the U23 championships in 2007 and 2008.

Tsilis was also used early on in the open age group. In his first participation in the World Cup in the 2006 season in the four-without, he only managed to qualify for the D final for 19th to 24th place. In 2007 and 2008 he rowed in changing crews with his U23 two-man partner Tziallas in the four-without at world and European championships in the open age group. While there were no successes with the former, Tsilis won the bronze medal in 2007 and the European title in 2008 .

After a season without international use, Tsilis returned to the Greek four-man in 2010. With Stergios Papachristos and the twins Nikolaos and Apostolos Gountoulas he won silver medals at European and World Championships . In the following year the Gountoulas twins switched to the two-man without, but Georgios Tziallas and Ioannis Christou moved from the two to the four to Papachristos and Tsilis. In this line-up, Tsilis was again European champion 2011 in Bulgaria with the Greek four and he also won another World Cup silver medal at the world championships of the pre-Olympic season 2011 in Bled. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the Greek four-man with Papachristos, Tsilis, Tziallas and Christou took 4th place with a gap of around 4 seconds on the bronze rank.

In the new Olympic cycle, the entire Greek team took a break in the heavy belt area. In 2014 the four-man without was re-formed and now entered the race with Giannis Tsilis, Dionysios Angelopoulos , Georgios Tziallas and Ioannis Christou. At the European Championships in 2014 and 2015 , the quartet won the silver medal behind the British selection. At the world championships he finished 6th in 2014 and 9th with qualification for the Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2015 . At the 2016 Olympics , the Greek foursome finished eighth.

Tsilis starts for the association Ioannina NO in his hometown. At a height of 1.84 m, his competition weight is around 87 kg.
