Stergios Papachristos ( Greek Στεργιος Παπαχρηστος ; born January 26, 1989 in Volos , Greece ) is a former Greek rower .

Career

Papachristos began rowing in 2004 and from 2006 to 2011 was able to take part in international title competitions seven times in junior age groups. At the World Championships for under 23-year-olds in 2006 he was already used at the age of 17 and he was able to occupy fourth place in the double scull with Andreas Tilelis . In the junior division in 2006 and 2007, however, it was not enough for medals. In the U23 area, Georgios Tziallas won a gold medal in two without a helmsman (2009) and a bronze medal in one (2010).

From 2008 Papachristos was also used in international competitions in the open age group. At his World Cup premiere in 2008 he only achieved a 29th place in the single, and his first European Championship participation in the European championships in Athens in 2008 was not yet a success with 12th place in the double scull with Ilias Pappas. From 2009 Papachristos rowed in the Greek four-man without a helmsman , initially forming a team with Ioannis Tsamis , Georgios Tziallas, and Pavlos Gavriilidis . In addition to a 10th place at the World Championships in Poznan, Papachristos won his first European title in this boat class at the European Championships in 2009 in Brest, Belarus.

In the following year the foursome was transformed, for Gavriilidis and Tsamis the twins Nikolaos and Apostolos Gountoulas moved into the team, which won silver medals at the European and World Championships in 2010 . In 2011 the Gountoulas twins switched to two-without, but Georgios Tziallas and Ioannis Christou moved from the two to the four to Papachristos and Tsilis. In this line-up, Papachristos was again European champion with the Greek four-man in Bulgaria and he also won another World Cup silver medal in the world championships of the pre-Olympic season 2011 in Bled. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the Greek four-man with Papachristos, Tsilis, Tziallas and Christou took 4th place with a gap of around 4 seconds on the bronze rank. Papachristos then ended his career as an international rower.

Papachristos started for the association OEA NAB Volos in his hometown. At a height of 1.90 m, his competition weight was around 88 kg.
