Rummel began rowing in his hometown of Pittsford , New York State in 2001 . In the junior class of the juniors he took part in the world championships in eighth place in 2004 and 2005 and won a gold medal in his second participation in Brandenburg an der Havel. In the B-Seniors (U23 age group) he only started at the 2008 World Championships and again won a gold medal in eighth place in Brandenburg.

After that, Rummel was used in the open age group. In the non-Olympic competition class two with helmsman , he became world champion in Poznan in 2009 together with Troy Kepper and helmsman Marcus McElhenney . Rummel recommended himself for the more important Olympic competition classes and rowed to fifth place in the 2010 World Championships in the foursome without and to a disappointing eighth place in the 2011 World Championships . At the Summer Olympics in London he was again selected in the four-without, he won the bronze medal behind the teams from Great Britain and Australia together with Glenn Ochal , Charlie Cole and Scott Gault .
