history

In 1789 the Salem cousins Israel and Simon Stone acquired the land that would later become Pittsford from the Phelps and Gorham Purchase after the American Revolutionary War , in which both served . The area of the almost 53 km² area was densely forested, but the soil was extremely fertile.

At that time still called Northfield , the area comprised the present-day towns of Pittsford, Perinton , Penfield , Brighton , Town and Village of Webster , Irondequoit and Henrietta .

After Israel cleared part of the forest , he built a log cabin near the "Big Spring" , which was a tent site for the local Indians . Simon built his hut further south. After their work was done, both began the grueling journey back to Salem to persuade family and friends to give up their livelihoods in order to take the risk of starting a new life in this unsettled wilderness. The persuasiveness was crowned with success, the own and eight other families settled in Northfield . Farms and cottages were built in the southern part of what is now the Village of Pittsford .

How Northfield became Pittsford

By 1796, the number of settlers had grown so much that thought was given to founding a city council. The first town meeting was held on April 5, 1796 at Paul Richardson's home . Dr. John Ray , Northfield's legendary doctor and town clerk , was the administrator of the town records . Over the years, Northfield grew and prospered and slowly became part of the Rochester metropolitan area , which at the time was nothing more than a cluster of cottages.

As a 19-year-old Caleb Hopkins settled in this part of New York, today's Penfield , in 1789 . His ancestors had been settled in North America for 169 years at this point ; his great, great, great grandfather was one of the passengers on the Mayflower . Caleb's first residence in the Genesee area was a log cabin on Indian Landing on Irondequoit Bay . There he married Dorethea Mabee , the daughter of his long-time friend Jacobus Mabee .

At the turn of the century, Caleb and his wife moved to the area south of Northfield . As an ambitious and ambitious man, he aspired to a career in the army. In 1804 he was appointed Lieutenant of the Militia Army by the first Governor of New York and later Vice President of the United States George Clinton, and in 1807 he was promoted to Major by Governor Morgan Lewis .

Not only did Caleb aspire, his hometown Northfield continued to grow. In 1808 the name of the city was changed to Boyle , allegedly because there were too many settlements with that name in New York State. Major Caleb Hopkins was appointed overseer of the city in 1808. In 1809 he was officially elected to this office and named "United States Inspector of Customs and Collector of the Port on the Genesee River" by President James Madison . He was also an agent when the first bridge over the Genesee River was built near Avon .

By 1810 Boyle had grown so much that the town was divided, the other half was called from da Penfield . The town of Perinton was also decoupled from Boyle in 1812 and became independent. What was left after these separations was henceforth called Smallwood . These divisions overlapped at the same time Caleb was promoted to lieutenant-colonel.

On April 13, 1813, Caleb Hopkins was appointed Colonel of the 52nd Regiment of Militia of the State of New York by Governor Daniel D. Tompkins . He was involved in the militia fight on the Niagara Frontier under the leadership of General William Wadsworth . Caleb suffered several shoulder injuries from participating in a number of fights and skirmishes . Caleb was highly regarded by his officers as well as his subordinates as one of the bravest and bravest men in the army. He was also admired as a hero by the people of his hometown, as the city's first citizen.

Thanks to his military successes and his services to the city, Caleb was on everyone's lips. On March 21, 1814, he was honored by giving him the decision to choose a suitable name for their city. What started with Northfield , then Boyle , and eventually ended up in Smallwood was shared for the very last time. One part was called Brighton , and the last part was given the honor of naming Colonel Caleb Hopkins. He chose Pittsford , based on his hometown Pittsford in the US state of Vermont .

Pittsford was registered as a city in 1827.
