Gabriel Bergen

Gabriel "Gabe" Bergen (born July 6, 1982 in Dawson Creek , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian rower who won Olympic silver in eighth place in 2012 .

Athletic career

Bergen finished ninth with the Canadian eighth at the 2006 World Championships in Eton. In 2007 and 2008 he tried his hand at double fours , but could not qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing . At the 2008 World Championships in the non-Olympic boat classes, he rowed with James Dunaway and helmsman Mark Laidlaw in two with helmsman and won the title. In 2009 he returned to eighth and won the silver medal behind the Germany eighth at the 2009 World Championships in Poznan . At the 2010 World Championships , he took twelfth place in the four without a helmsman . The following year at the 2011 World Championships in Bled, he rowed the Canadian eighth to third place behind the Germany eighth and the British. In 2012 the Canadian eighth set a world best time of 5: 19.35 minutes in the run-up to the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne , but only finished third in the final. At the Olympic Games in London, the German eighth won ahead of the Canadians.

Bergen rowed for the Victoria Vikes , the University of Victoria's sports team . His father Robert Bergen rowed to 13th place in a two-man team at the 1976 Olympic Games .
