The rowing competition in the men's double sculls as part of the rowing regatta of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from 6 to 11 August 2016 in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon . 26 athletes in 13 teams competed.

The competition, which was held over the Olympic rowing distance of 2000 meters, began with three preliminary runs with four or five teams each. The first, second and third placed teams in the preliminary runs qualified directly for the semi-finals, while the remaining four teams had to go to the repechage . Here the first three teams qualified again for the semi-finals. In the two rounds of the semi-finals, the top three teams qualified for the final, while the fourth to sixth placed teams rowed for 7th to 12th place in the B final. In the final on August 11th, six teams competed for Olympic medals.

The teams qualified for the next round are highlighted in light green.

The final was won by the Croatian brothers Martin and Valent Sinković , who had already dominated the previous Olympic cycle in this competition class. Shortly before the end of the final, they were harassed by the strong Lithuanian team with Saulius Ritter and Mindaugas Griškonis , who finally rowed the silver medal. Third place went to Kjetil Borch from Norway and Olaf Tufte, the two-time Olympic champion in the singles .
