Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan achieved the first medal win and, at the same time, the first Olympic victory for a New Zealand boat in this boat class. For the 40-year-old Slovenian Iztok Čop it was the sixth participation in the Olympic Games. The bronze medal in London was a complete set of medals in double sculls (gold 2000, silver 2004, all together with Luka Špik ). In addition there was a bronze medal in 1992 in two without a helmsman. His partner Luka Špik was there for the fifth time. The Italian Alessio Sartori also took part in the Olympic Games for the fifth time. In addition to the silver medal in London, he won gold in the double scull in 2000 and bronze in the double scull in 2004.
