nano4women is an internationally operating network that was founded in 1995 and brings together representatives from science, business and politics in the field of nanotechnology . The association supports prospective and established women scientists with various projects.

Organization objectives

The network supports women scientists in their careers in the field of nanotechnology with the aim of increasing the proportion of women in this labor market both nationally and internationally. To this end, the network pursues the exchange between nano-science, politics, business and the public. The focus of the work of nano4women is the gender-political discussion with regard to women in the natural sciences . To mark the start of the nano4women association, an international specialist conference was held on November 18, 2005 in Paderborn . Possibilities to promote the proportion of women in nanotechnology were discussed and concrete goals of the project were presented. Trends and developments in the field of nanotechnology as a research area and as a labor market were discussed in various forums. The conference was under the patronage of Edelgard Bulmahn , Federal Minister for Education and Research a. D. The establishment of the network was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

In order to achieve these goals, various projects have been launched which are currently being coordinated under the direction of Prof. Ralf B. Wehrspohn from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Ilka Bickmann from science2public - Society for Science Communication . The content of these projects consists in raising the awareness of schoolgirls towards nano-science as a possible course of study, promoting the careers of women nano-scientists, in particular business start-ups , and the general public dialogue on the subject of nanotechnology.

The presentation of the results of the network's work is part of an exhibition in the DASA - Working World Exhibition Dortmund.

According to its own information, the network has around 300 members. In a database, specific partners for specific projects and collaborations can be identified and addressed. A newsletter will be issued.

Projects

NOrA

The Nano-Orientierungs-Akademie (NOrA) promotes the interest of high school girls in MINT subjects, especially the area of nanotechnology. The aim is to facilitate the later entry into studies and careers in this area. In cooperation with universities, the academy presents nanosciences as a diverse research area. Schoolchildren, accompanied by mentors , carry out laboratory projects on site. At the end of each career orientation academy, a jury awards the best project. Four academies have taken place nationwide since 2010. As part of the “nano4girls & leadership” project, which is part of the “Women at the Top” program, NOrA receives financial support from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

NEnA

The Nano Entrepreneurship Academy (NEnA) is aimed at women scientists in nanotechnology. With the academy, the career network nano4women conceived a start-up initiative together with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Together they have been promoting the NEnA since 2006. During the academy, the participants are made aware of the topic of business start-ups. In workshops they pursue a founding idea from the conception to the presentation to a jury. Through the patronage of nano4women, the Nano Entrepreneurship Academy is also affiliated with the “Power for Female Founders” action program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. With this federal funding, a total of six one-week nano-entrepreneurship academies were carried out nationwide from 2006 to 2013.

nano + art

The "nano + art" initiative was a competition advertised throughout Germany between 2005 and 2010. Nanoscience graduates were invited to submit artistically processed microscope images from nanotechnology. The competition, endowed with prize money, pursued the goal of creating a public through art's access to nanoscience. The initiative worked together with Evonik Industries , MLU Halle-Wittenberg, action line nanotech Hessen, NanoStart AG and others. a. Selected exhibits are summarized in a traveling exhibition, including the presentation of the winners of the competition 365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas of the initiative Germany - Land of Ideas . The “nano + art” initiative later gave rise to the nanospots short film festival.

nanospots

The Nano Short Film Festival nano spots first launched in 2012. Funding is the initiative of the Volkswagen Foundation , Scientific , Zeiss , and in cooperation with the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. The film festival aims to open up an interface between science, filmmakers and the general public, with a particular focus on nanotechnology. The short films submitted, which contain both real scenes, animations and 3D effects, will be presented at the Nano Short Film Festival after a preselection. The sponsors of the festival, endowed with a total of 10,000 euros, include: a. Carl Zeiss Microscopy , the Bethge Foundation and the action line hessen-nanotech.
