The nanospots initiative has organized a nationwide short film competition on the subject of nanotechnology since 2011 . Selected short films will then be presented to the public at the annual Nano Short Film Festival in Halle (Saale) . The aim of the nanospots initiative is not only to present Germany-wide research projects in the form of short films, but also to encourage discourse between scientists and the public about the limits and possibilities of nanotechnology. Journalist and TV presenter Yve Fehring has been moderating the individual festivals and panel discussions since 2012 .

Festival structure

At the Short Film Festival, scientists and filmmakers will present jointly produced short films on an annually changing topic from the field of nanotechnology . The endowed festival is preceded by a competition round in which a jury selects the best 10 films from all submissions. At the festival, three winners will be determined through an anonymous live voting by the audience.

The topics of the competitions from 2012 to 2014 were “Living with nano: Humans between nature and high-tech”, “Do you feel nano? How does nano feel? ”,“ Changing the world with nano - what will our life look like in 2020 ”.

Promote the initiative

The initiative is a project of the nano4women network and was funded from 2012 to 2014 by the Volkswagen Foundation in its funding initiative “Science Mediation and Communication”, Carl Zeiss Microscopy , the Bethge Foundation and the Hessen-Nanotech Action Line. The direction of the competition and the festival is currently Prof. Ralf B. Wehrspohn ( Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg ) in cooperation with Ilka Bickmann (science2public - Society for Science Communication).
