from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralf Boris Wehrspohn (born August 17, 1970 in Lübeck ) is a German physicist and, as a member of the board of the Fraunhofer Society, is responsible for the technology marketing and business models department. From 2006 to 2015 he headed the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM together with Peter Gumbsch . From 2016 to 2019 he was head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Microstructure of Materials and Systems IMWS. He holds a chair for microstructure-based material design at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg .

Life

Wehrspohn studied physics at the University of Oldenburg and received his doctorate at the age of 26 from the École Polytechnique in France. At the age of 32 he became a professor at the University of Paderborn . In between he worked in industry at Philips Research in London and completed his habilitation in physics after working as a group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. In 2006 he was jointly appointed to Halle by the Martin Luther University and the Fraunhofer Society .

Wehrspohn is a member of the Future Foundation of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, founder and co-operator of the Fraunhofer Center for Silicon Photovoltaics, founder and co-partner of the company SmartMembranes GmbH, co-operator of the Fraunhofer pilot plant center for polymer processing and polymer synthesis and a member of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft eV, the International Max- Planck Research School for Science and Technology of Nanostructures, in the Central European Chemical Network (CeChemNet), in the Association for Research and Development in Plastics Technology (FEKM) and the German Physical Society , Electrochemical Society, Optical Society of America, Material Research Society.

His work focuses on nanostructured materials and components, such as those used in microelectronics, sensor technology, photonics or in photovoltaics.

The Senate of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft unanimously elected Ralf Wehrspohn as the new Board Member for Technology Marketing and Business Models on May 8, 2019. He took office on October 1, 2019.
