Mindaugas Griškonis (born January 17, 1986 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian rower who was three times European champion in the single .

Career

Mindaugas Griškonis has been rowing since 1999. After finishing tenth at the Junior World Championships in 2002 in quadruples , he reached the A final in single sculls in 2003 and finished sixth, and in 2004 he finished fifth. In 2005 Griškonis was fourth in the U23 World Championships , in 2006 he finished seventh. In 2006 he also took part in the world championships in the adult class for the first time, at the World Cup regatta in Eton he reached twelfth place in the double scull . In 2007 Griškonis won second place behind New Zealander Joseph Sullivan at the U23 World Championships , and at the 2007 European Championships he also received silver behind Ralph Kreibich from Austria. At the U23 World Championships in 2008, Sullivan won before Griškonis, as in the previous year. At the Olympic Games 2008 , however, Griškonis finished second in the B final and eighth place in the overall standings.

In 2009 he won the B final at the World Championships , and Griškonis won his first title at the European Championships at the end of the season. In the 2010 season Griškonis could not improve any further, a fourth place at the European Championships was followed by an eighth place at the World Championships . 2011 reminded of the results of 2009, Griškonis won the B final at the World Championships and won the European Championships . After finishing eighth at the 2012 Olympics , he won his third title at the 2012 European Championships .

In 2013 he reached only fourth place at the European Championships , at the 2013 World Championships Griškonis qualified for the A-final and took sixth place. In 2014, the Czech Ondřej Synek won the European Championships ahead of the German Marcel Hacker , while Griškonis received the bronze medal. At the 2014 World Championships , the Lithuanian took fourth place behind Synek, Mahé Drysdale from New Zealand and Ángel Fournier from Cuba. At the European Championships in 2015 , Griškonis finished sixth. But he was able to improve his form in the course of the season and received the bronze medal behind Synek and Drysdale at the World Championships . At the start of the 2016 Olympic season, Griškonis took second place behind the Croatian Damir Martin at the European Championships in Brandenburg an der Havel . At the 2016 Olympic Games , Griškonis and Saulius Ritter competed in a double scull, the two of whom won the silver medal behind the Croatians. It was the second Olympic medal in rowing for Lithuania .

In 2017, Griškonis and Ritter took fourth place at the world championships . In 2018, Griškonis competed in the single and won the silver medal at the European Championships behind the Norwegian Kjetil Borch . At the World Championships in Plovdiv Borch won ahead of Synek, followed by Griškonis who won the bronze medal.
