Ángel Fournier

Ángel Fournier Rodríguez (born December 31, 1987 in Guantánamo ) is a Cuban rower . He took part in the Olympic Games three times for his home country and achieved his greatest successes as vice world champion in 2013 and 2017 in a single .

Fournier contested his first international competition in 2007 when he finished 21st in a double scull with Yuleidys Cascaret at the first World Cup in Ottensheim . At the second World Cup he started in the single , where he reached the B-final and finished 11th overall. At the World Championships in Munich, in turn, he was a member of the Cuban double foursome, which reached 11th place. Also for the Olympic season 2008 Fournier was part of this team, which finished last in the B-final and thus rank 12 at the Olympic regatta.

After Beijing he switched to the single in Fournier and qualified for the A-final at his first World Cup start in Banyoles , where he reached 4th place. At the World Championships in Poznan he came in 10th. In the 2010 season he only started at one World Cup and skipped the World Championships in New Zealand, the next year he came 8th at the World Championships in Bled .

In the 2012 Olympic season, Fournier drew attention to himself at the first World Cup in Belgrade when he made it to the A-final and, after taking the lead in the meantime, finished third just a few seconds behind ex-world champions Ondřej Synek and Alan Campbell . At the second World Cup in Lucerne a few weeks later he repeated this success when he won the bronze medal again before Campbell behind Synek and world champion Mahé Drysdale . At the Olympic Games in London , he won the B final and reached 7th place.

At the 2013 World Championships in Chungju , he finished second, ahead of Marcel Hacker , but behind Ondřej Synek . The following year, Fournier took third place at the 2014 World Championships . After a sixth place at the 2015 World Championships , he also reached sixth place in the singles final at the 2016 Olympic Games .

During the season, Ángel Fournier had to give New Zealander Robert Manson the right of way in the World Cup regattas twice . At the season finale at the World Championships in Florida, he won the silver medal behind Ondřej Synek, who won his fifth world title.

With a height of 198 cm, Fournier has a competition weight of 100 kg.
